Not to get into an internet dick measuring contest, but I guess I can judge how calibrated your internet eye is by saying the 2" 1/4" wall DOM is poop pipe  :woot: If you've ever welded you can see the heat affected zone as you are welding... Guess I must use a harbor freight welder to get these snot welds on my poop pipe/crappy rig.
Yes everything that wasn't near a welded area looks like crap because I've been working on this for almost 2 years and I don't bother cleaning the whole axle off when all I'm welding is a couple of brackets. I appreciate your concern, but cell phone pics posted on the internet are a poor way to judge what the strength of a weld is.

oh thats rich!  fyi, i own a fab shop! i do this everyday, full time gig

you are arguing with the wrong guy man, sorry

your welds look like crap cause you are not prepping the material enough! uhm yeah the area you are welding where the weld goes! is that clear enough for you? it has very little if not nothing to do with flux-core wire. blaming the wire and your welder for poor quality welds is like blaming the pencil for spelling words wrong.

i would like to formally apologize to "mattamd_xp"

you are awesome, your welds are perfect and i can't imagine how you have done such fine quality work with such limited tools and space

your pm really made me see the error of my ways and i will be more gental and kind to you in the fututre. actually i will just stay out of this thread cause you obviously know everything and need no help nor advice

again sorry

if the mods deem it needed to remove these posts i am fine with that

have a great day everyone

your welds look like crap cause you are not prepping the material enough!

This, are you prepping your metal, all steel from the foundry will have a E-coat to prevent it from rusting, sometimes they also apply a oil coat over the E-coat to further protect the steel.

and yes, I have been welding since I was 7, my father owned a metal company for 30 years and grew up around metal and welding. My best advice would be to slow your wire speed down and prep your surface better. take a flap wheel or a DA and clean up the metal about 2-3 inches from where you are actually gonna weld, spray with some brake clean and bevel your edges if you don't already. You stated you made a couple passes, but I am only seeing one weld sitting high on the material. Also it appears in some of the pics, and granted it might be just the pics, but it appears your re-introducing contaminants into the working field, almost like you pulling and pushing your welds forward and back; in the pushing motion, you might be dragging dirt into your field and is giving what appears to be a poor weld.  Heat effect does not indicate great welds, it idicate heat penetration, if you have dirt in yout weld, all the heat transfer in the world won't help the weld.

Yes building a rig with a 110 and flux core is completely doable, but you need to compensate for the short comings of the equipment.

I have a question, are the axle end coil over mounts done?

Yes. I flexed it out and the top cap of the kingpin clears the spring by about 1/2" at full flex. Is there something else I should be aware of?

I would like to see something a little more beefy than just two tabs welded in there.

It's actually a formed bracket that wraps 3/4 of the way around like this |_|. I may be picking up a Miller 180 or 211 this week to help a bit with this  8)

Oh having a 211 doesn't guarantee you wont rip brackets of your axle right Ian?

Obviously it helps to set the welder properly.  ;D

There are no guaranteed results based simply on equipment -it must be used properly too  ;D
