There's no replacement for Displacement

« on: February 18, 2011, 12:39:43 PM »

Hey guys,

finally I have found myself an offroad rig I am actually excited about wheeling......clearly since within an hour we lit it on fire, got it stuck, blew a front hub, and bent a drag-link.

Meet the Scrambler!

1981 CJ-8 Scrambler
Rebuilt 258/RebuiltT18/Rebuilt Teralow D20
Ford 9"/Dana 30 4.56 Gears, Spooled and Lockrite.
4.5" Springs, 2.5" Shackles
Dual Friction Clutch
Fullcage
37" Boggers
AGR Box/Brace

Plans?

Desert-tan paint job. Wheel it this year......maybe over the winter, Spring over or 4-link it.....

well last night was fun.....spent some time in the woods with the scrambler.....

today, i was able to score a NT Dana 44 out of a late 70s FSJ for $150 with inner shafts. Buddy of mine has some scout outers and knuckles and full setup to finish the axle up. Hopefully I can find a set of 4.56 gears and a spool for cheap money.

Now since i figured i'd swap the front axle i was thinking of where I would turn to with the suspension. I know I am going to spring over the rear axle and get rid of the ridiculously long shackles in there, but for the front, its starting to be kinda an internal battle between me going with a 3-link and Panhard bar, or me outboarding the front leafs, shackle reversing it, and going SOA........

Any ideas or knowledge? ALSO anyone know of anyone with some 4.56 D44 gears or a locker.

A 3 link will be far superior, but will be more expensive.

Just figured id give an update..........

Remember that urge to NOT buy the Dana 60/14 Bolt and 39" Iroks........

Picked um up, was able to do an even swap for the Dana 30/Ford 9" that was in the Jeep. Both axles are open with 4.10's but hey, they're one tons.....

Did some pretty pretty to them, hit em with paint.

Now what i did was to turn the scrambler into a hover Jeep, I figured that it would be very easy to wheel it seeing how it floats,

Picked the iRoks up today, all (4) 39.5x13.50xR16.5 Irok Radials mounted and balanced for $600, they have about........400 miles on them total.

These are the tires next to my ancient, yet well loved LINDE VI-206/LINDE 31-A MIG Welder. She's old but works like hell!

Now I decided to go with 2.5" Rear CJ7 leafs outboarded in the front, and the rear got an S-10 spring with helper removed. Mocked up the front, and got dont worry she didnt stay like this:

Now you guys gotta tell me, I have heard nothing but good about those Scrambler Futura 245/75/16 Tires....... I mean they SAY Scrambler on them, they MUST be for this Jeep......

(I figured it'd be easier to just use them to tinker with it) The 39's on her my jack cant even reach the tube.........

Just a quick little Flex shot on a hill in the yard. I still have to make the rear shaft, give it brakes, put fluid in the front end (that would help before driving it huh) and make the passenger highsteer arm and draglink.

I ended up selling the Boggers for $900 cash to someguy........he was putting them on an unlifted Ram 2500.........

Well, I decided to throw the iRoks on when i got home this morning.......

Few driveway shots of her.....

The only thing I am hesitant about is the rear shackle angle......it has a slight forward sweep to it when sitting as it is right now.....when the springs are flat (I mean FLAT) the shackle is perfectly plum with the ground.....
