I'm for it. Maybe not as far as your friend went though.

screw that, just ride it.  If you want to have a project, get the cherokee running.

let me know if you wanna go for a ride, I'll grab the bike and swing up.
Dad always said "If it has boobs or spark plugs it will be fun AND will cause you problems."

Well, Cherokee has sold. And until 3 weeks ago I had done nothing with my bike.

2 weeks ago I took it to friends place and he rebuilt the carbs, 2 were clogged solid and all 4 were very rusty.

With the carbs back on, we put a new battery in it and after messing with it we were able to fiinally get it started. Then we changed the plugs, oil and filter, and I swear we had to repair something else, but I forget. (that was two days ago.)

Today we wrenched on it pretty hard, found the front caliper was frozen and the reservoir was also full of [censored]. So after a trip to the junk yard we were able to find what we needed and got those replaced. Then we adjusted the rear brake and started putting all of the bike back together.

Lights all work, brakes work, and it runs. Time to test the clutch...

Sweet!  I live ten minutes off the Blue Ridge Parkway in VA, you should make the road trip down.  Those bikes are great for chopping

Definitally some cool things you can do to them: https://www.google.com/search?q=kz650+cafe+racer&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=TIcjUt9khMOKApvLgaAK&sqi=2&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1255&bih=597

But first I am just going to ride it. When I learn well enough I might do a road trip, I will have to see how comfy it is :) Would be cool to come down and visit you. Thanks for the invite, tell the family hello from us!
