I guess it all depends on what he plans to do with it.  If plans include registering it and getting it inspected by MA standards & driving it on the street maybe a 4.0L drivetrain would be the easiest way to go.  If its going to be a trail only rig by all means a Chev motor with auto all the way.

Well its not going to be a trail rig, at least not yet. Im using the 4.0 because its a direct drop in and it would be a lot harder to do a v8 and ill be taking my jeep to california, i need something quick small and efficient that will meet emissions an i would need legal paperwork to say the v8 came from another jeep an has eveything needed for propper emmissions. In short its just easier.

Average at best

I agree with Miguel, to legally register in the state of mass any vehicle with a swapped in non-factory engine, it will need to be from the same model year or newer, it might in this instance be more cost effective (not really labor effective though) to swap in a 94 and up 4.0 drivetrain.

I regret not having a daily driven jeep that I can just hop into and putt around town with, this build is inspiring me to going out to spend money... My wife definately doesn't thank you.
