Well the summer is clearly over and with a bunch of stuff wrapped up I decided it was time to start in on the the winter list of projects for the J10.  It was out every weekend and has been a great running truck.

Some of the upgrade for the winter are steering box, rear bumper, and it is finally time to prep the 360.

The 360 has been sitting on a stand for about a year and I finally decided to start into it.

Intake and valve covers off.

Pan is off so I can take a quick look.

Old cam and lifters are out and the new ones are ready to go in.

I am in the process of cleaning up a bunch of the accessories and also getting some new gaskets ready (thanks to Jeff @ Crown).  I'll post up some more pictures and the process continues but I am excited to finally get around to prepping this motor for the truck.  She should be ready to swap in in the early spring.

What are the specs on the new cam ? And why are you replacing it? Did the old one have a flattened lobe/bad lifter and what were the specs on the old cam ?

Rich,

I am putting in the Summit 8600 and some Comp lifters.  I was going to swap in some higher compression pistons and run the 8601 but decided I would do some other work and run the engine with the 8600.

Basic Operating RPM Range      1,500-5,000
Intake Duration at 050 inch Lift      214
Exhaust Duration at 050 inch Lift      224
Duration at 050 inch Lift      214 int./224 exh.
Advertised Intake Duration      272
Advertised Exhaust Duration      282
Advertised Duration      272 int./282 exh.
Intake Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio      0.472 in.
Exhaust Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio      0.496 in.
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio      0.472 int./0.496 exh.
Lobe Separation (degrees)      112

It seemed that the lifters that were in the engine had been sitting for a while and were in need of replacement so I figured while I had it on the stand I'd do a cam and new lifters.

I have the same cam sitting on the shelf waiting to go into the 401 in my waggie

Don't forget match the dist drive gear  to the cam

What is the ratio of those fancy rocker arms and what is the duration after adding rocker ratio

Rich,

I am excited about trying the 8600.  Lots of people like it and some feel there are better options.  You can't beat the price for one thing .  I learned a lot about cams as I did my research and realized that a hot cam with a really lumpy idle will just move my powerband up and I don't want to loose all of the awesome low end torque I have now.

The roller rockers are 1.6 and they have hardened pushrods.  I don't know what the duration is after factoring those in.  Is there a specific way to calculate that?

Bob has kindly offered to help me degree the cam so we know that we are right on the money.  After that I had planned on cleaning things up (you know I like them purdy) and shooting it with the AMC factory color.

I believe the 1.6 is what AMC uses, which would mean there is no change. but here is a calculator http://www.wallaceracing.com/rockercalc.php

Thanks Bob.. I thought 1.6 was standard for AMC but didn't know off the top of my head.

Rich - I forgot to comment about dist/cam gears.  There is a nice matched set for Bulltear in the engine so I am going to use those.  I am going a different distributor as well so there will be a HUGE HEI for sale soon.

I have the 8600 in my current 401 and honestly you would swear it was a stock cam, zero lope, not noticeable at all.  Doing it over again I would have gone with 8601

Miguel,

I hear you on the 8601.  Some have found it does ok in a pretty much stock engine but I was just worried about loosing the low end torque.  I am definitely looking to make the J10 a bit of a hot rod but it might be the next engine before I go with high compression and a more aggressive cam.  This truck is still going to have towing duty for our boat.

The two things that steered me back towards the 8600 for now were:

Basic Operating RPM Range                     2,200-5,500

Camshaft Manufacturers Description      Fair idle, excellent midrange power. Requires 9.5:1 and higher compression, 2,500+ stall, and gearing.

What is the CR in your 401?  Are you running the 291 heads?

Yup running the 291C heads, I think it bumps the C.R. to 9:1 I cant remember, plus the heads are polished ported & gasket matched on both the intake & exhaust.  That might have something to do with it.

Oh Kent I have ton of AMC engine gasket stuff I'll be selling might be interesting for you.

Just a little update on my motor progress.

Got the block cleaned up a bit more.  Out with the Chevy orange and ready for some AMC Blue!

I had a very generous friend with experience with cam installation (Read .... Bob Butler) offer to come up and degree the cam to check that it is installed just right.  Had to test the AMC blue as well.

We were able to double check it off the cam card

Next up is preping the rest of the parts for re-install. It is all in the little details...
