After I cut open the oil bath filter it became clear it wasn’t a mouse nest rather a poorly maintained filter where the steel mesh had tried out and got sucked into the valves. I took the opportunity to fab up an automotive paper filter by riveting the filter housing onto the bottom of the old filter that I had cut off. The paper filter draws in more fresh air then the old oil soaked mesh filter.

I spent a couple hours cleaning and prepping the tank.

After cleaning and blowing out the copper lines the pump was ready for mounting

With fresh oil I ran the pump for 2 mins then shut it down to check oil level. I then ran the pump until the tank was filled.

Before and after

How much air does this compressor move?  How does it compare to new-er compressors?

Thanks,

I’m guessing 12-15 CFM base on the 3 hp motor with 2 stage pump. Today’s compressors are HP inflated especially in the 70s thru 2004 when the government tried to enforce honest ratings, that lasted all of a few years now their back to inflating HP again.

Take my sears craftsman 3.5 HP 120v compressor that kind of HP (3.5) just isn’t possible on 120v I did a test and got 6 cfm so the true HP is around 1-1.25 even though it states 3.5HP.

There are a couple ways to find cfm, I filled the tank until it cut out (my craftsman was 175psi Then I triggered a refill cycle by using a blow gun until it kicks in (140psi). The time it took to refill was 56.4. The difference in psi (35) divided by 14.7 to convert to atm units =2.3. Then multiplied tank volume in cf by the number of atm units (20 gallon divided by 7.48 =2.6) 2.3 x 2.6 = 5.9 I divided 60 by the seconds it took to refill one cycle 60 / 56.4 =1.0 I multiplied that number from the total of atm and tank volume 5.9 x 1.0 =  5.9 cfm

You round Everything down?

I get 6.8cfm with your numbers just by carry the decimal places out.

Yes, I gave myself room for error when I timed the refill cycle.
