I bought this CJ in May of 06 off eBay. Although it needed a clutch I thought I would bid seeing it was fairly close by (Quincy). Well, it didn’t take long before two ebayers got into a bidding war and I was out (price too high $2700). I called the seller and left my contact number just in case the sale fell through.

Two weeks later I get a call from the seller telling me the winner from Ct. never showed up. I drove up to his place the following weekend and $400 later it was on my trailer heading home. I have since sold off the tranny, t-case, axles, and tailgate and got my purchase price back then some.

Anyways, I plan to make this my trail rig, nothing fancy, just going to try and build it with used parts I have accumulated over the years. I plan to retain the frame, engine and body. For the most part it will appear stock looking besides the 3 ½ YJ springs, 33” or 34” tires on 44s,

Here are a few pics.

CJ7 tailgate which I sold two days ago.

I took a quick assessment of the frame which looked good for a 32 year old Jeep better then I’m used to seeing, no rot just surface rust. The floors look good, one hat channel will need to be repaired.

Overall the engine seems good the oil pressure at start-up was 60 psi and 20 at hot idle good readings for an AMC engine.

The winter of 08 I started the disassembling process.

Floors are in good shape for a 32 year old CJ

Body off

As luck would have it I found a couple more good Jeep deals so I put this project on hold the winter of 08.

Fast forward to present day. I plan to start-up this project again this week and hopefully stay on task. It seems every time I plan to start this project another Jeep deal comes along.

Anyways, now that the Suburban is out of the driveway I can start work on the frame. I will update as I move along.

Thanks,

The CJ came with a 360/T-15O/D-20. The 360 with stay and I will add a CJ T-18/D20

I went with the GM TBI for a couple reasons, I didn’t want to spend the $1300 or more for an after market FI unit and my thinking was that by pulling and installing it would give me a better understanding on how the system works with all it’s sensors.

Although I didn’t need to I pulled the complete harness (except for tail lights) I also pulled the sensors, bulk head, grommets, and replays.

Now that is sweet, Jeep/AMC 360 with Chevy TBI.  Great combo
Even better with the T-18/Dana20.  Thats a very good start!
You going with the hydraulic clutch set-up?

Once you get that installed, I'll pay you with parts & beer to do the same swap to my J20!

BTW, I'm sure you're well aware of them, but in case you're not and don't feel like making your own: http://classicent.com/jeep.php  has the hat channels.

I wasn’t planning to go with a hydraulic clutch although that could change.

I have two options for the D-20. I have the correct Bronco sliding gear and the guts to a D-18 to go 2.46 or a tara-low 3:15. I have both units.

Funny story on how I got the exclusive Bronco gear. I was driving home in my 3B one day when I noticed a cop following me. Well the cop followed me all the way home and into my driveway where I thought he was going to give me a hassle about my NH plate. Well he gets out of the cruiser and says, “I know you didn’t drive that thing all the way from NH.

Anyways, long story short, he turns out to be a Bronco guy and we talked jeeps and broncos for about an hour.  Two weeks later the cop is at my door again with a bronco sliding gear in hand and gives it to me for nothing.

Jeff, I’m sure the install will go better the second time around my head is still spinning on all the stuff I have been reading concerning fine tuning a computer chip.

Classic is one of the best for body parts, great company I’ve used them before but I think I’ll repair this one myself. Thanks for the link.

Much respect to your ability to get the right deals and your vast knowledge and desire to research.  You are like Master splinter to us young turtles in the four wheeling pond.  I can't wait to learn and hope you post everything.  I have had about 6 CJ's and early wranglers and pulled parts off of at least 2 or 3 dozen in my builds and considering that year your floors are impecable.  What a great start, can't wait to see more.

Thanks for the kind words.

I hope I don’t disappoint you guys, but I don’t believe this build to be anything special compared to others on this forum.
