Thanks guys!
Twisty, I used 1/8 1108 rod around 130 amps no pre-heat with spot welds.
That's essentially what I did, but with Ni55 rod. Seemed to work, and there were no cracks in the welds.

It works for me.
If you asked a dozen people what’s the best rod/technique most likely you will get 12 different answers.
The rod Tim used has good results Ni55 as does the Ni99.

Finished installing the axle shafts, shoes, and hardware.
I had a hard time finding the proper all metal prevailing torque lock nuts (crushed) for the backing plate and bearing retainer. After going to two hardware stores, one automotive, and one machine shop I settled on nylon lock nuts with the thought of using loctite.
Although the nylon lock nut is rated at 400 degrees and with the use of loctite it should hold, but for the piece of mind I order the correct nuts from the bolt factory and will install them when they arrive.
Side note: never reuse any type of locking nut.

Posi the hardware and pads in your 5 look exactly as my 7's do . Were they all universal? I though I had read somewhere there were 2 different drum sizes if so is there a difference in the shoes, springs etc

his is a D44 yours is a model 20, different rears, and FYI, 99% of all rear drum brakes look the same. I am sure I could pull the drum off my pickup and it would look just like that

Ian, good question. I thought about a couple options one being the disc the other going with 11” drums. The disc without a doubt is the best option and the only reason that I didn’t go that rout was because the drums although rusty were new and I already had new shoes and hardware on hand. I also have an extra set of 11” drums I thought about swapping on but going from 10” to 11” wouldn’t yield much improvement although, it is a big improvement for the older Jeeps with 9” brakes.
My plans were to wait until the shoes wear out then swap over to disc.
Rich, John’s right they all pretty much look alike however, the 76-77 had 11” brakes 78-86 had 10” so oddly enough your 83 amc 20 has the same drum, shoes, and hardware as my 86 44.

Rear drum setups are very cheap to maintain as well!
Nice work Posi, you're really cranking on this thing!

Thought they looked close. John silly I know drums basically look the same
I might not have too much Technical knowledge but I have changed rear shoes on my share of trucks

I got a little side tracked this weekend with the purchase of a 79 CJ5 so I didn’t get any work done on my project 5. However, I did remove the perforated seats for my other Silver Anniversary and installed some other low backs in I had in storage.
I guess I was in the mood for interior work this weekend so I removed the interior of the Cherokee with plans of updating at a later time
I blew a brake line on my truck coming back from picking up the CJ so I bend and flared some new lines as well.

Drivers side looks like it was replaced.
Pass. side appears to need work, other than that, I agree with mika.. nice floors! Loving the seats, they look like hte ones from our 1975 18ft Galaxy.

Decided to go fishing on the Bass River and Bishop’s Point this weekend so didn’t get much done on the project.
However, I did meet Dave (Davy-P) and picked up a Chevy 44. Dave’s father and I had a beer and chatted awhile until Dave came home then we all loaded the axle plus an engine onto my truck. They are great guys and it was a pleasure to meet both of them.
I will be using the small bearing spindles to convert my front waggy 44 from 6.5 to 5.5. I will use the flat top knuckles on another project. I would have used them on this project but I already had the 3 ½ springs for sua.
The prongs on my tool to remove the adjustment ring broke when I tried to remove the last one. I should have used some heat but the previous one came off fairly easy.
