The aftermarket steering bracket moved the box forward 1 ¼” from its original position and trimming the crossmember for access to the PS lines was necessary. I didn’t enjoy cutting the crossmember but I plan to plate the rear of the cut and add some steel to the front for added support.

I will trim a bit more for wrench clearance then remove for plating and paint.

Looks great, and the trimming seems fairly minimal. Smiley

that tiny bit of trimming won't be any issues but I understand your line of thought.  trimming should always be avoided when ever possible when it comes to a structural piece.  It looks great though and as Mitch said, you did keep it to a minimal.

Nice work indeed! Wink

Thanks guys,

The CJ frame came from the factory with three captured nuts on the driver side frame rail for the frame shackle hanger and steering bracket for whatever reason my frame was missing the rear most captured nut. However, there was a perfectly good empty round hole so I ground down the 6 points on a grade 8 nut and burned it in.

I trimmed the front crossmember a bit more then ran a few beads to bridge the gap and straighten the area. I also used  por-15 patch over the weld.

I welded in a plate behind the trimmed area for extra support as well, por-15 patch, and top coat.

After test fitting the bracket there was a need to enlarge one hole to fit properly. Although the kit came with a ¼ spacer (bracket to frame rail) I decided to cut down a used frame shackle bracket and use that instead (it was larger and matched the front frame bracket perfectly). The PS pump was painted by the PO so I removed all the old red paint.

Primed and top coated the pump, steering bracket, spacer, and pitman arm. I installed the lines to keep the oil where it should be and not mix with the paint.

I flipped the bracket over and used it as a template to drill a third hole to help support the box (bolt furthest on right). I torqued the crossmember bracket bolts to 45 ft lbs and the frame bracket bolts to 35 ft lbs used blue locetite as well.

Side view of spacer
Side note: I had previously moved the shackle forward 1” to use yj springs.

Installed the pitman arm (180 ft lbs) and drag link (60 ft lbs min) (FSJ)

Thanks guys,

I started plumbing in the brake lines. I buy the lines in a 25 ft coated roll and flare the ends. The multi valve that came on my 77 was drum/drum so I plan to use a wagon valve that is disc/drum.

Here are the two multi function valves the top one is the original drum/drum 77 CJ and the bottom is from a 79 wagon disc/drum.

The 79 wagon has a 5/16 mounting bolt and the CJ has a 1/4, a sleeve should do the trick.  The holes match up so I can use the 77 backing as well. I cleaned up the valve and plate.

I wire wheeled the exhaust manifolds and used a top coat of inexpensive heat paint. I used copper RTV on both sides of the gaskets and let it skin over (about 20 mins) before installing the manifolds.

The stock flat washers are thicker then standard flat washers and are hard to find locally so I used two grade 8 flat washers per bolt.  I also used Anti-seize which has aluminum and graphite and is good to 1600 F. I tightened the two inner 3/8 –16 1 ¾” bolts to 25 ft lbs and the 4 outer 5/16 -18 1 ¾” to 15 ft lbs starting with the inner bolts first (gradual steps). Bolts were grade 8 as well.

Yes to both questions. I used a bench wire wheel and a file for the tight areas. The imperfections on the combination valve are from the factory.

After taking the pic I saw the bolt……guess its time to install the starter.  Grin
