Sorry Rich, she looks happy in the pic. Jerry is a good kisser.... from what I remember, but my memory isn't always the best at the end of our Club BBQ's.  :-*

Sorry, Rich.

Last Saturday I noticed my family dog of 11 years limping, it appeared his right front paw was injured.
Made a splint to support the leg, he was very unsteady for the rest of the day
Called our vet and a few others, no one would schedule an appointment until Monday
Sunday morning his front legs were paralyzed, wasn't able to stand at all, it was no longer a paw issue rather neurological
Found a vet who would see him in hanover Sunday morning, exam took all of three mins, nothing we can do here, have to take him elsewhere
They referred us to VCR Hospital in weymouth, Dr they said possible tumor or lesion in the spinal cord area
Told I could take him home with some pain meds and return later that day to put him down

What made thing tough, he was alert, wasn't in pain, and everything seemed normal besides his limbs
As a family we decided he wasn't going down without a fight and a third opinion
Took him to Angle Hospital in Boston, basically they said the same thing
Decided to hold him overnight and let the neurologist see him in the morning
Next morning received a call from the neurologist saying he believes it is disc related
Does a workup, blood, x-rays, MRI
Dr calls back to say he has 3 herniated discs and feel if he removed them plus 2 others (5 total) and fuse the vertebra's he would have a 95% chance he'll be walking in 2-6 weeks
Surgery took 4 hours, and was completed at 6pm yesterday the Dr feels everything went as expected
Waiting for a call this morning at 9am for an update, should be able to pick him up tomorrow if all goes well.

Thanks Jay, Dr called, three legs are working, and he feels the fourth will come around, if things progress I'll be able to pick him up tomorrow.
This thread sucks big time.

So happy to hear that you were able to get him a second opinion.  It would have been a terrible loss.  Hope your pup starts to feel better soon!!

Regarding cancer in pets-

NEVOG (New England Veterinary Oncology Group) is a clinic that strictly deals with cancer in animals. My family has brought 2 dogs there with the hopes of getting a little more quality time with them.  The first one was Hannah "Banana" my shepherd/lab mix who had osteocarcoma in her upper jaw bone.  Surgery was not feasible, and she had radiation treatments instead.  She was diagnosed in Feb 2008, and died June 27, 2008.  Without the radiation, she would have died in a matter of weeks.  She was ill when I took her along for the family vacation (early June 2008), but she got to go.  I still have the tennis ball that she found under the steps of the rental house beside her picture.  Rex had a more successful prognosis when he was diagnosed with melanoma on his gums in spring 2011.  He went through multiple radiation and chemotherapy treatments.  He went into remission, but the melanoma came back.  He went through another round of radiation and again went into remission.  During this time he never saw a decrease in the quality of life.  The chemotherapy drug was supposedly gentle, and he didn't have any real side-effects (except for nausea after the drug).  As a result of his treatments, he went on two family vacations, and we were able get about 1.5 extra years with him.  He was put down this past fall when the cancer came back very quickly and aggressively.

Always seek a second opinion before putting an animal down.  NEVOG does require a referral from your veterinarian, but they are a great bunch of people.

Rich - so sorry to hear about your loss.  They are true family members and that makes our time with them special and parting way SO difficult.  15 years is a good run (although is hurts just as much) and I'm sure there were a lot of good times.  Hang in there..

Chuck - My wife worked at Angel for years and they have some great people there.  I hope all continues to go well and good for you that you went to get additional opinions on the root cause.

Yup this thread brings the suck.
Posi sorry to hear I hope the little guy pulls through.
For all you non pet people what Posi just spent is a very health down payment for a new tow rig.

When cj was 11 she got encephalitis which is the swelling of the brain after a bouncy of x-rays , mri's ,blood tests and 6 months of kemo we got to keep another 4 years. The weymouth vca has treated us great right up till the end. We spent a ungodly amount of money on her and would do it all over again

My husky has been a nightmare if the front door opens she bolts out the door and runs up and oden the street crying. She is looking for her best friend I have been going out of my way to spend time with her

This thread makes me want to cry....I don't presently have a dog simply cause my present living situation doesn't allow it, but it makes me want one so much more.   I don't understand people who don't like pets.
