got a garage....time to outfit it
« on: June 11, 2010, 10:05:28 AM »
well i decided tostop whining about not having tools or workspace and decided to create my own.  i co-own a 2 family that has a massive 2 car garage that needs new doors desperately.  in my finite wisdom i saw an opportunity when looking at steel replacements and will spend the summer cleaning and prepping it for the arrival of my growing stable of vehicles, work out equipment, and misc.  here is the true point of this thread...i am looking for advice  from those that have gone down this road already, setting up first garage, and what u learned, bought, wish u bought, did differently, u get the idea.    lill info on the space....roughly 20x20 with a lot of vertical space to roof truss, drain in the center that i know nothing about, basic electricity, and what a TON of junk inside.  i will snap some pics tom when im there for rent.  early plans are epoxy floor, 200 amp and ton o outlets, lighting, poss a side door, insulation, tools (need a ton o advice here)   and of course steel garage door replacements, beer fridge and recliner.  thanks for ur input 8)

My biggest regret is my tool chest.  I bought a good one from Lowes (Kobalt brand) and it's great, but I've already filled it.  I wish I had done it right and just bought the right tool chest instead of the one that was on sale.

Secondly, storage!  I have two shelves that a full, two racks that are full so I built a loft.  Well worth the hastle of building it because I can now store EVERYTHING up there and not have to worry about it.  My only regret is that I wished I had built it a little smaller....I might have gone a little overkill with 60% of my garage.

actual tool boxes are nice......but if I were to set up a shop i would outfit thwe whole thing with Lista boxes. they are unbelievably handy and durable. 100% better than any snapon box you can get and they come in a ton of different sizes.

check out www.motorheadextraordinaire.com he's got the best prices I have seen anywhere especially on the "blem" boxes which he lists on his site. and they are right in chelmsford so no shipping just go pick it up.

#1- compressor infinately useable
#2- good solid work bench and vise

I have a couple roll away tool boxes, I have actually almost emptied one because they take up so much room, I ended up hanging peg board on the wall and I hang most of my tools there, saves a [censored] load of space.  the peg board it actually spaced off the wall with 2x4, so I can run conduit and air lines behind the peg boards.  I also find that with the peg board, I put my tools away with more regularity than before.  can never have enough shelving and storage.

My next big purchase will be a drill press.

Oh yea....compressor is bigtime.  Then use 1" pvc tubing to run a line all around your garage.

My compressor only puts out 150 psi and I will use schedule 80 1" pvc.
