Pocket knife tech
«
on:
January 20, 2012, 10:22:38 AM »
I am in the market for a new pocket knife, looking to spend at or under $100 or so. I am looking for something of great quality, fairly light weight and can easily be removed from my pocket and opened with one hand. Previously I have been carrying a Spyderco solitude that I bought at REI at least 15 years ago, this has the 1/2 serraded blade and 1/2 traditional blade and a pocket clip.
I do not need a large bulky knife as I carry my leatherman for expected trips (hunting, wheeling, snow shoeing etc..)
So I am kind of wondering what other use, what is your opinion on your knife, the value and maintenance.
What are some recommendations?

i liked jerry's kershaw so much i bought one myself. you can flip it open with one hand. it has a nice clip so it stays in your pocket. its the best pocket knife i've ever owned. other than a super light weight gerber that i use just for plants at work, this is the only knife i use now.
i have the 1670BLK.

spyderco makes great knives.
I would like to get an SOG personally, but I really love my spyderco.

Benchmade. There is no other. Friend of mine carried his through two deployments. Tough as nails. Several models within your budget.

i have the 1670BLK.
i have that same one, had it 3+ years now. very nice knife, holds an edge well and overall a good size. i have had SOGS (spring assist broke within a year) and spyderco (snapped the tip on blade using it improperly, also never liked the way it opened and it was to large in my hand) and benchmades' (the clip and handle screws loosened up constantly and i ended up breaking the blade, it also cost $240 which is just plain stupid!) all of them were alot of money for something i ended up breakng rather quickly.
i carry a knife everyday (carpenter's pencil sharpener) and they get used hard and often. anymore i just try and buy a knife for under $50 and consider myself lucky if i can keep them a year so obviously i am pleased currently

Thanks Guys, I've Owned a SOG knife in the past and was a potential option.
I am going to look into the kershaw knife as well as the benchmade. Off hand does that Kershaw come with a serraded blade? if not I'll search.
Just wondering, Todd, what were you doing that broke your spyderco? I've rarely used mine as not intended, couple times as a screw driver before, but I never broke the blade. Was it a newer model?

I have a SOG and carry it daily for the past year with no problems. Spring assist and half seregated. Blade has stayed sharp but I only use it for cutting rope and for eating when we grill out on the transmission line.
If you are looking for a deal check out
www.clymb.com
or
www.steepandcheap.com
. Every so often they have really good deals on knives.
I've heard CRKT are really nice blades as well.
Jerry should chime in, I think he's a connoisseur of knives.

Thanks, I chatted with jerry earlier. I used to collect knives back when I was in the scouts, but haven't stayed abreast as to what current technology is and what popular

i owned the spyderco back in 2001ish broke it at work, i don't recall exactly what i was doing. i believe i was prying something up but as i recall it wasn't anything that the blade shouldn't have been able to take? again i lmow ot was my fault but it was an expensive knife and i was not pleased
i did find out last night that my nemchmade knife can get repiared for around $30 (i need a new blade) i will send the knife to benchmade and they will swap out the blade and send it back to me. i was pleased to learn that
