Hello there.
Chad here.  Driving what's more or less a YJ. Been wheeling about a year or so.  Pretty easy to moderate trails only.  Been trying to build up my jeep a little at a time.  I have seen this clubs banner on a guys jeep like everyday now for a year or so and decided to check you out for myself.  Other than some childish high school drama is a few of the threads you seem like good peeps.  Not ready to go hardcore yet myself so I am just getting to know some locals.  Anyone out here from the leicster worcester area?

;) I personally am just looking to find people who are fun to be around and enjoy what I enjoy. Not liking the big hardcore ego driven know it alls I find on some forums.  Usually never on the computer really but I am out a job so been at home with out a heck of a lot going on.  I run a  4" Suspension lift, with a 1" body lift.  Nuthin fancy.  Debating on tires and rims but currently I have some 31" owl AT's on it.  Good tread but one leaks. If I can get back on my feet I will aim for some 33" something or others  TSL's I'm thinking

Not sure if I am ready for a ride like the jeep I see around here all the time.  It is big daddys. (sorry don't know the name) I parked next to it at walmart yesturday and tried to say hello but I had to leave before he came out of the store. :D not stalking you just recognized the jeep and wanted a closer look.

as soon as I found you I may leave you .  To make a short story of this I just got a pile of bills thrown at me and my wife is all over me about selling my pool table, boat and jeep.  I have a ford f250 and the jeeps my toy so it may have to go.  The boat will be the last I sell as I may need to go proffesional on the bass tournament to pay my bills now.  The pool table isn't even mine but me and 3 friends bought it new so that isn't gonna happen.  Hope I can work it out but if not I might have a buyer already ;)

Hi,

New to Jeepin' here.  Recently picked up an '01 TJ Sport with 4" lift, SYE/CV, 33s, Banks respiration.  So far, haven't had a chance to do any off-roading, but I can see how it's $$-blackhole.  Don't even need it, but want it =D.  Kinda getting a little off-topic, but can anyone recommend a good 4wd shop in the waltham area?  Would rather not travel an hour to go to Bay State Offroad.  Anything in Worcester?

Thanks

Sounds like you have a nice start with your rig.  What do you need done? Santos Jeep Service in Worcester is a good place. Manny is a good guy and loves to talk wheeling.

No pics yet.  I always forget to break out the camera.

As far as mods go, I don't have the tools or space yet, but as far as heavy work, I'd like upgrade my gears next, but I figure I might as well do the axles while I'm at it and then why not the lockers, brakes, oba, and steering, and hell throw some armor on.  On top of that I need to save some $ for a house :woot: I think I might just wait until I break stuff to replace it, since it's not my dd.  Btw, I thought I'd see A LOT more jeep heaps in salvage yards. What gives lol?  Oh and I'm new to Jeeps, but not off-roading. . . Never owned a car car.  Previous vehicles were an 01 Vehicross (VX) and 96 Bronco.  The Bronco = fun in KY mud as long as you remember to lock the hubs beforehand =P

Funny thing.  The guy I bought my TJ from had his work done there (Endangered Species).  Thought about them, but they're in Northampton, which is like 2 hours away from me.  But thanks for the suggestion.  I'll check out the sponsors and keep hunting.

That's tempting.  I have no idea the time or cost to get that swapped though.  My only reservations are swapping a D30 for another D30 and I was planning on 4.56 gearing.  Stop tempting me lol.

Santos welded my old CJ frame up a while back and did great work.  Go visit him and Stumpy if you want Worcester.  I would definitely make the trip to Baystate if it were me and I have an old CJ that isn't at all highway friendly :)

Hey guys, new to the forum/group. Live over in South Boston, on my second Jeep, a 2003 TJ Sport. I had an '03 Columbia 3 years ago, and after several vehicles in between, back to the Jeep family. Not much done to the rig at this point, a few exterior mods and a new set of 31's. My goal is to get a set of black Cragar's as soon as I can.       I'll get some pics up soon.

Hey everyone! My name is Kevin. Ever since I got out of the Marines I wanted a Jeep and about 2yrs ago I bought my first one...and I LOVE IT. The previous owner already installed some after market things and I can't wait to hit it with a wrench myself....even though i don't know much.
I came accross your site one day after clicking on a link from a post on CT Jeep.
I pretty much lived in Bridgeport all my life with the exception of my 4 years I spent shooting missiles off of my shoulder in the Marines but now i'm back and looking forward to meeting new people to hit the trails with.

Hey Everyone!

Just found this site today and am definitely interested in joining New England Jeepz so I can take my '09 unlimited wrangler X out to play.  My dad use to have a CJ and I remember going off roading with him as a child...and I've wanted my own Jeep since!  My '09 is all stock and will probably remain that way as I piece together add-ons over the coming years.  I just wanted to get some suggestions on required components to join the club....so any suggestions on CB radios, fire extinguishers and good tow straps?  These are the only essentials I need to meet the requirements.    Happy to find the site!

Best,

Eric

welcome to the forum alpineEK
sounds like you've got the wheeling bug.  Lots of good guys with great advise so you found the right place.
I bought my fire extinguisher at walmart for $11.96, mt cb there as well its a cobra basic 40 channel for $39.00 and they carry a 2"x20' heavy duty strap there as well for $24.00 ( we do not, as do most clubs, hooks on our straps just a safety precaution)   Nothing to special but they all get the job done to get you out there sooner ;)

Looks like your doing it right, first experience what your Jeep can do in stock form before upgrading.

As a suggestion I'd think about some rocker protection and a transfer case skid plate. Want to keep that 09 looking good and driveable!

Thanks for the tip.  What is the trail difficulty level?  Are there different levels for every trip taken by the club...obviously being new to the world of off roading I don't want to do anything too extreme initially...my jeep is also my daily commuter-so I don't want to destroy it, lol.

we do all levels of trails. from easy class 6(un-maintained public roads) type roads to xtreem "buggy" type trails on private property.

Another question...I'm looking at a CB radio package
http://www.rightchannelradios.com/jeep-offroad-cb-radio-106/jeep-off-road-cb-kit-uniden-pro-510xl-418.html

Anybody get this system?  I was thinking about getting the spare tire mount with the 4ft Wilson Flex antenna...is this antenna and placement suitable for offroading?

Hey guys i started off in the wrong tread,

My name is jay and I have a  97 Cherokee and i would love to take it on some easy trails to just learn a bit and not beat the crap out of my jeep.  I live in the new haven area of ct and was wondering if i could be pointed in the direction of some spots to try out off road.  I don't like to be blunt and not introduce my self but i was just wondering if i could be help out on the impossible task of finding a place in ct to go off of the road with your vehicle.  Anything would be helpful.

Thanks,

Jay

It is best to join a 4x4 club which will grant you access to numerous parcels of private property.  That is the best we can do.  And unfortunately, we can't tell you where these locations are if you are not a member.

.................but we can offer you a chance to ride along with us in either your cherokee or one of our rigs to see the out doors available to those who join the club.  As Axle had stated, we wheel once a month ( thats tooo funny I said we  :D )  I mean they wheel once each month and I wait for pretty pictures to make calendars with.
;D ;D ;D (inside joke, you can laugh about this later with the rest of them I'm sure  ::) )

Maybe our wheeling is not for you or your jeep but you never know till you get out there and see.
I built my CJ to look pretty and never thought I would take it into the woods until I met these clowns.
Now I take it on the class 6 roads and park to watch them wheel. Baby steps for me, but now I am hooked.

Wheeling is great but meeting the guys here has been the real treat.  From engine and brake issues to fabrication and welding done right...there is a whole crap load of knowledge floating around here on this forum.

You can be a member and wheel occasionally or every trip.  In your rig or ride along and just hang out on the trail with us.

What ever you fancy is.  There are too many legality issues to discuss in this thread but know that if you wheel with New England Jeepz then your doing it legally ;)

if not click my orange banner for a direct link and be on your way ;)
Apps have to wheel a rig on a qualifying event to become a member, but I don't think it's gotta be your own if it isn't ready quite yet.  J-Dawg flips his arse over tea kettle so he probably won't mind you wheeling it.  I think he's seen the worst that can happen to his jeep already

A short introduction.  My name is Norm I used to live in Auburn till in 03 I joined the Navy.  I got out in 08 and stayed in Jacksonville, FL.  Well I have been wanting to move back home for some time now.  I convinced (easily) the girlfriend that MASS is much better than Florida.  Trust me it is.  Well that being said.  I leave in May with the reserves to the sand box. I'll be back stateside in 2011. Trying to move back summer that year. I will be bringing back my little treasure I found here in the sunshine state sitting in a garage.  A 1983 CJ7 bone stock with 53K miles on it.  It needed a little help getting her back on her feet but since then I added a rear locker and also a Alloy one piece axle.  Next the motor is getting pulled (a little 2.5) and I have a donor 4.2 also a 4" lift and some 33's.  Glad to see a club in Mass because there is one on every street corner here in FL.  Just like CVS and Dunkin Donuts.

With that said here is my tow rig and jeep.

Welcome Norm, itís nice to see another CJ on the forum with Mattís intro that makes two CJs this past week.

I like the look of your CJ, do you have a 4 or 5 speed?

RE: Flat towing, if you remove the driveshafts, unlock the front shafts, fill both diff cases, and a front end alignment (if needed) you should be fine.

Thanks for your service, be safe.

It has a T-5 till it breaks then I'll put something more "trail rated"  Unless I come across a good deal on something here in florida.  Seems like a Jeep pull apart down here you can find anything.  My latest fine is a set of Lock right lockers for the both axles for 150$.  Couldn't resist.

just open them in windows paint first then select all and shrink it down and then save them as another jpeg name in a folder on your desktop.  Then just go to tinypic.com and upload them and choose the forum image link and copy and paste it into the message box here on the forum.

or email them to me and i'll hook you up ;)

You just donít see the 5s looking that good in the northeast.

I see your 79 is a bit 80s looking, windshield frame, dash, steering wheel, and tranny. I like the pre-72 side mirrors, may have to borrow that idea for my project.  ;)

Sweet rig Matt!

My 5 is a mix of few years to get the Jeep I wanted... the mirrors and lack of fender flares was my tribute to the classic 5 as will be the soon to be found renegade style aluminium wheels.  Jeep was rebuilt from the ground up with mostly new metal panels (only the cowl, some of the floor and firewall survived).  I would love to say I did all the work myself but I had it done and I watched and tried to learn...the next one I will restore myself.  Some pics of the process.
Thanks Posi- take it but don't plan on being able to see much- they are kinda small

Matt, do you recall where you bought the low back seats they look good and appear to look comfortable.

A lot of aftermarket low backs I've seen are junk but yours look nice.

I like the originality of the radio in the dash but doesn't the cd deck bug you where you located it near your knees?

Love the dash look Wish I had painted my dash green like my jeep ::) not sure why I had painted it gloss black

Thanks for the help with the pics Bigdaddee.  The real radio does get in the way at all and I an reach it but I'm not the tallest guy around.
Posi- I will look into the seats- they are the most comfortable low backs I have sat in

Hey guys,

I just moved home to the N.Shore of Mass after being in Va for the last decade. Was involved in wheelin in the south where the land is open and the trails are plentiful. Findin that not to be the case now that I have come home. However, I did find this place, but it's a slight drive;

http://www.rmtp.us/gallery-terrainpark.htm (http://www.rmtp.us/gallery-terrainpark.htm)

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself. I run an old school 83 FSJ with some slight mods, and will be lookin to join some club rides asap.

We have a few members here with FSJs

Any pics?

Welcome to the forum.

Even though 83 was the last of the big body cherokees but not the last of the FSJ's, its "old school" to the world of JK's and fancy dual stock lockers. I currently run open/open, but with a freshly rebuilt & worked 360, I usually let my torque make up for it.

I keep getting errors when I try to load photo's, sorry. If you bought BFG's last year, it was the truck in their tri-fold product literature at the tire shop...

Welcome to all since I last posted a welcome to all!

There is plenty of land in the northeast, most of it is private land that we work hard to gain access to, and try to work even harder to retain the access.  I too am on the North Shore and there is only one legal trail with in a 20 minute driving distance, but no one here has access since the leasing agreement is through another club and we simply have yet to bargin a whheling agreement with them yet.... YET

Most of the trails are about an hour and a half drive from the north shore. Some of the premeir trails are just over the line in NH and they are balls to the walls fun.  I would suggest to the newbies, get your applications in, we have a couple great trail rides coming up for newer members (slightly easier trails) that I am sure you would enjoy.

Lastly, that land/trail in Maine is not worth the 4.5 hour drive IMHO

As a noob, I should probably mind my P's & Q's until you get to know me, but having done my due diligence and read through some of the posts before I introduced myself, it seems this club is for no nonsense, tell it how it is kind of guys, so....with no offense intended or implied.....;

as a club officer, I completely understand your need for a posterior covering disclaimer on my photo...but nothing about it conflicts with Tread Lightly; I was on private land, with the owner of the land with me, on a dirt ROAD which the owner, who owns ORVs, maintains with his own Tractor equipped with a grader. I agree 100% with Tread lightly and believe the movement should be adhered to by anyone active on the trails in an ORV. But if we can't throw some mud, when the conditions ARE appropriate, then we might as well just pack our walking sticks into our Prius' when we want to get out into Nature.

My name is Joe, from Newton, Mass., proud owner of an '09 Rubicon, new to off-roading, and looking forward to some adventures this summer together with my 16-year-old son Nick. I'm a big car buff and have always loved Jeeps. Long ago, my favorite high school teacher lent me his yellow CJ and I've been hooked ever since. It's never too late. Looking forward to meeting you all!

I know I need to get some mud on my Jeep, that's why I'm here. I had a CJ5 when I was a kid but all the places I used to go trail riding are all gone now. I have to do a couple more things to it then I plan on putting in an application for the club so I maybe seeing some of you soon.

Might message Krome - not sure if he does these things on the side or not. Its really not hard to do yourself - might try calling a truck stop cb radio shop and see who they recommend.

there is a good one on route 20 in shrewsbury but I forgot their name.  You really only need a cheapo walmart cobra to wheel though.  Or are you looking to talk to friends over seas?  My dad had a huge mast off the rof of his house over 30 feet tall and power amplifiers.  He was all juiced  up from that shop. He used to talk on what they call skip radio which is when the frequency travels from far away.  Not sure how but all of a sudden he would here jamacians and  what not.

he could chat with me on cb from his house in Barre, MA all the way to the outskirts of gardner and would  keep me awake with his endless banter some nights when I left the Mount Wachussett CC.

They aren't cheap but will tweak your cb free with purchase.

Hey all,

I wheel with Rich and have been thinking about joining up.  He told me to pop on and say hello so here I am.  I'm gonna try and make the next run with him and passenger so I can meet some folks.

I currently have a 99 XJ with a 4.5" Rusty's short arm, on 36SS's, full open and a disregard for body damage.  I'm selling and buying stuff to get ready for another Jeep build.  Hopefully a tubed up MJ on long arms is my plans.  Here's some pics of the rig.

Hey,
Nope its actually a 4.5" pro comp coil conversion kit. To my knowledge they don't produce these anymore ? Very hard to come by. I have coils front and rear, no leafs  :) but i do have to say they dont flex as well as i thought =/ I think another company came out with a coil conversion for the YJ's but no garage will install them / buy them (to my knowledge, just something i read on JF)

Saw your banner on Jeepzforum and thought I'd check it out. Looks like a good forum and club. Got an '06 TJ, 4.0, soft top, six speed. I bought it used in '08 and have'nt modified it yet although a friend of mine sold me his 2" spring blocks...waiting on the tires to wear enough to justify buying bigger ones.
I just recently began listing parts to stroke another 4.0 to drop in later on. Having been a mechanic for 32 years I'm lucky enough to already have the tools and a garage to do it in.  ;D
Looking forward to someday going to an event and meeting everyone in person.

i run the same jeep. funny enough i bought mine in 08' as well. it runs ok on 33's with stock gears but in the end you'll want to do an axle swap.

Whats up gents,

My names Steve. I was finally able to get myself the kind of Jeep I've wanted pretty much since I was 3. Its  99' Cherokee, 4.5 in lift , 33x12.50's and a bunch of steel reinforcements . I'm looking to do alot of wheeling and developing my skills. I'm also planning a custom expedition trailer that I hope to start over the winter. I look forward to seeing you guys on the trail.

mud is unpopular because it creates rust and reduces the life span of moving parts. Plus I find that it stinks like poop.

That said, I have a hard time avoiding it :D

You''l find soon enough wheeling in New England it's much different then Florida's small sand dunes, long flat powerline trails, and mud pits. Roots, rocks, hill climbs, drop offs and tight trails are only a few of the challenges N.E. wheelers face on a regular basis. Do yourself a favor and join a 4 wheel club.

Hi everyone, my name is Chris from Leeds, Maine, where there's more holsteins than people.  ;D

I sold a 98 ZR2 Blazer:

and took the money for a ride to Springfield Mass where I bought a 99 XJ, drove it home and scattered it all over the garage for about a year:

It was rough, but solid and had a ton of parts with it, had the RE4.5 installed, rear Super35 with an ARB and a lot of NIB stuff for OBA, front gears, KC lights, wheels, tires, hi flow exhaust, etc.

Here's the build album if you want to browse through it. I had a lot of fun in the garage through the winter getting it to where it is:

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v171/zealr2/XJ/ (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v171/zealr2/XJ/)

Here's where it's at today and the specs on it. RE4.5, Viair OBA, F&R ARB lockers, 34" LTB's, Custom sliders, Napier flares, 4.56's, blah, blah, blah.

I am just getting to the point where I am challenging it/myself in the rocks etc. It's a blast. Ask my wife how obsessed I am.  8) I keep telling her it's my mid-life crisis and it could be much worse; it could be a hot lil redhead.  :D

I'll leave you with a video from last weekend in the rock garden at Allwheels Offroad Park:

http://www.youtube.com/user/zealr2#p/a/f/1/omZjn5NhuTQ (http://www.youtube.com/user/zealr2#p/a/f/1/omZjn5NhuTQ)

Check out my Youtube channel, there's lots of wheeling videos from the club in there. (Maine4x4.org)

Nice site, BTW, love the looks, seems like a good bunch too!  8)

Very cool xj there Chris. Every one of us is going through these mid life type ordeals...I think  ???  Then again it's probably just the Jeep bug.  Either way once you start altering and seeing what your rig can do, for most there is NO TURNING BACK.  It's BIGGER AND BADDER OR NOTHING!

 :D You noticed that, huh?

Jareb, the lead spotter, was upset after that. He had a point that we need to have 1 possibly 2 spotters and that's it. I told him he did good, for the most part I heard him 90% of the time.

There were a lot of people at that spot that day, it took me 1/2 hour to get a chance to enter the garden. I could have been a jerk & told everyone to shut ta heck up, but it wasn't too bad once we got the line we wanted.

Thanks for the warm welcomes, it's appreciated muchly.  :)

Hey, Mitch, thanks! I was very skeptical of the rear. Personally I don't know why anyone would put $1500 in a D35, just doesn't make sense. But once I saw it had 30 spline AlloyUSA shafts and an ARB installed I figured I could truss it & run it for quite awhile. So far it's held up well. Time will tell, I guess.

I have seen some amazing things from lesser built 35's on 34/33" tires. Tony (heyzipyourfly) used to own an orange YJ with a 35 and if you told me it was a 35 while I was watching him wheel/pull me out of maki's back yard, i wouldnt have believed it. I think he did eventually break, but it took a long long time, so I think your right, "time will tell". :D

I enjoyed the video, looks like you enjoy the rocks more than I :D thanks for posting.

I'm right into the rocks since I got my sliders done. I don't want to go anywhere else. Ledges, rocks, boulders, that's it.  :D

It'll probably wear off & even out, but for right now I want to be in the rocks.  ;)

Hey Everyone.....Just checking in to say Hi.   Some of you I know and others I dont.  For those that dont, name is Gregg and I have been in to Jeeps and wheeling since around 1995. Built and destroyed several vehicles in that time.  Been out of the loop for the past few years due to school  but glad to see that there are still people around that are enjoying the sport and cant wait to hit the trails.

Title: Re: Start here! Newbie introduction thread
Post by: angri on March 29, 2011, 10:44:06 AM
Next on the list is a snorkel, 2-3 inch suspension lift (the previous owner only put a 3 inch body lift in), wheels and tires, locker... Does it ever end?

The only thing it has now is the body lift, 35's, 4:11's after the tires went on, and the rear bumper I put on.

I have a new stinger bumper, 10,500lb rugged ridge winch, and on-board air kit going in this weekend.

thanks for the welcomes!

Save some cash and forget the snorkle. It'll never be needed to wheel around here

The previous owner removed the airbox. Now there is just a cone filter stuffed in the end of the inlet hose. Besides looking stupid I have no protection from from water at all. I'm looking at the Spectre system that pulls air in from the cowl. It is fairly cheap and will give me better protection from water and most likely supply the engine with cooler air than the stock box.

sounds like a diy fresh air intake..just leave it.  its probably breathing better than the stock airbox.

I agree, invest in a locker. I can not think of a single trail where water would be high enough to get in the motor and you would be in it

Hello, I joined also so we can wheel with new rigs and go to new places. That's my green Ranger in the picture, I've been getting bored of wheeling circles around that Explorer all the time so I can't wait to meet everyone and hit the trails with some capable rigs. Between grocery store visits and dropping the kids off at soccer, that Explorer doesn't leave much time to hit the dirt  ;D.

putting a v8 in a vehicle with no frame is sort of like clothing sizes. "just cause they make it in your size doesn't mean you should wear it"  "just cause you could put a ls motor in an xj doesn't mean you should"

there are a ton of engine swaps that you can do. check out www.novak-adapt.com they have all the parts and they have done it so they know a bit about what they are doing.  to be fair the engine that is actually going in my XJ is a LM7 5.3 out of a 2001 chevy silverado but it is in the LS family of engines

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your new purchase.

New Jeep, what's your opinion?

I believe some of the later 2012's will have the old 79 CJ Orange color although they will call it "crush" not mandarin

So far I love it. The new engine/transmission is a huge step ahead from the old one.   The techie add ons are nice, too.

I picked up the tan. Too bad they stopped making it already.

Hey Guys,

I got out of Jeeps a couple years ago.  I used to go on trail rides with you guys a while back.... probably back in 2004/2005.  I had a 2000 red TJ that I built up from stock.  I ended up sellin the jeep and getting into BMWs for a bit.

Married now, and looking for another hobby.  I haven't bought another jeep yet, but actively looking at TJs.  Hopefully I'll have something by the end of the year.  Looking for something in the $10k to $15k range.  Looking to build something up again, maybe do a motor swap for a v8.

Look forward to seeing all the old faces and meeting some of the new guys.  See you guys soon.

- Jay

Hey, Bob here. I have a 94 V8 ZJ currently with a 2" bb w/ upcountry coils, 31" BFG A/T's, and the rest ill put in a build thread once i get around to it. I currently do not belong to any Jeep/4x4 clubs but hopefully soon when i can make the minimum requirements ill apply to be in NEJ.
I currently work in a steel building fabrication shop and before that i worked at a dodge dealership (lube boob mainly), I'm 20 years old, i do light/mild wheeling, but hoping to get into some harder more technical stuff.
Here is a pic of my ride (i dont think it qualifies as a 'rig' yet because it isnt capable enough in my eyes for that but dont get me started)

Nice zj.

Thanks, I'm  from Hanover, MA
nice looking grand! you build steel buildings? like a metal barn? welcome!

Thanks. Yeah its pretty cool. We fabricate different parts to buildings, like right now I'm fabricating a set of railings for a new gym that's being built in Stoughton, MA, we make stair stringers, stair pans, mezzanines, ladders, and pretty much anything else you cold possibly need for a building(out of steel i mean).

Newbie intro...

Name's John.  I moved here to Nashua, NH from San Diego, CA to be closer to the rest of my family.  Can't say as I like the weather but the mud sure is fun :).

I am the proud owner of a 1991 Wrangler and minus the occasional designated driver, I have logged all but 2 of the 150K miles on it.

I'm fairly experienced at offroading.  Done a lot of desert trails and rock climbing out west plus the occasional romp in the mud and stroll through the woods here.  Never as an "organized group" such as this but always with friends because Jeeping alone is no fun.

Here's a pic of my baby going swimming in VT:

I have a 2004 TJ that I have quickly built up to take on some mean stuff, I will leave my info at the bottom. My fiancť comes wheeling with me all the time and our dog loves it as well.  I look forward to meeting everyone on Sunday and hopefully becoming a member in the near future.

What's up guys, Duncan here. Current Baystate member, might have met some of y'all at FC. I'm looking to join a second club for the 2013 season, just a feeler here to see if this might be a good fit. My goal is to get out on some more aggressive trails as my build has progressed fairly quickly. Driving skills have always been there. Here's a quick run down of my heep:

'08 JKR
3-link long arm front and rear, lifted about 4", front coilovers 12" travel, antirocks
JK 44's, 4.88's RCV's, blah blah blah, they're coming out next month anyway
Full cage
37x12.50 Maxxis Trepador stickies on Spyderlocks
Vortech supercharged
Winch, skids, bumpers, armor, ect...

Winter plans:
Got a set of 60's, kingpin front with RCV's and Reid's, FF rear, 5.38's, 35 spline, ARB's
Atlas 4 speed, 11.7:1 overall
Outboard rear coilovers, 12" travel
Hydro assist

Title: Re: Start here! Newbie introduction thread
Post by: ArticRubi on October 18, 2012, 12:46:05 PM
what are you plans/specs for your one ton build?

I'm having Solid Axle build them. Lame, I know.

Front:
70" WMS - WMS, 5.38's, ARB, kingpin, Reid outer knuckles, RCV's 35 spline inner/outer, Chevy brakes,
Rear:
70" WMS - WMS, 5.38's, ARB, FF, 35 spline inner/outer

When they come in I'll have some brackets to burn on; coilover mounts F&R, 3rd link front, truss for rear 3rd link, swaybar tabs. Going to see how their track bar brackets work with existing geometry after I get everything bolted up, may change, may not.

I'm holding off on doing a stretch for right now. Running 37's I'm pretty well dialed in with my breakover angle, I'll be belly dancing if I stretch it from here.

Future plans will be a 4-link and stretch both front and rear, I'll have to do a fuel cell to link the rear as the factory JK tank is well in the way. Comp cut, and probably some bigger meats. I really like the sticky treps I'm running now, but they only make them up to a 40". The 44x19.50 PBR's definitely give you a nice footprint.

I saw on the BSJ forum y'all will be in NH next weekend?

Hi All,
Wanted to check in. I just found you guys when searching on Google for some Jeep groups in NewEngland. Been here all my life, originally out near and in Methuen MA, now I'm out in Clinton MA area. I own a 2K Jeep Grand Cherokee (My Wife's car), and I current;y drive a Scion xB 2009. Ive been wanting a Jeep for a while now, and have setteled on the 2007 and newer JK Unlimited models. I want to get one and start building it out. I have been thinking allong the lines of a 4 inch suspension lift (+one inch body) and 37's with loosing some sheet metal they should fit. I've read some of the MA state laws for lifted vehicles and I'm pretty sure the 4 inch is the max I can go given the Unlimited's wheelbase and track. I'm not an experianced mechanic, but have some garage work unde my belt, but would need help if I had to do alot of the build on my own. Are there any shops in the area that work with Jeeps? are any club members doing work on builds?

Thanks,
Bob

Welcome.

Any plans for the axles?  If you keeping the axle stockish, I suggests a simple 2-3" lift and 35's.
The D30 front (assuming you do not get a rubi) is really only useful up to a 35" tire, and even at that size you should carry spare shafts.  Locking the front axle make that breakage a guaranty.

Also I think, and someone will correct me, some 07 2door JK's have a D35 rear and should be avoided if you can, I think all 4door got the 44 rear.

Again, welcome

yes, Looking into either a Rubi off the start, or picking up a 44 (or 60 if I can find one I can afford) to switch in.

Also I think, and someone will correct me, some 07 2door JK's have a D35 rear and should be avoided if you can, I think all 4door got the 44 rear.

I've done some research, and all 4wd JKs have Dana44 rear, but onlly the Rubi have 44 on the front, the others are all 35s.. Even with the 44s I'm looking at sleeving for strength and gusseting over the pumpkin and at the ends.

I looked it up, yes 07 had D35 rears

http://www.quadratec.com/jeep-replacement-parts/jeep-axles-differentials/jk-dana-35-rear.php

I just don't know if it is all models or just the 2 door.

The rubi is a good starting point. If the 44 is what you want, get it right off the bat. the extra money you spend in the purchase price will quickly be offset when you choose to buy selectable lockers, deeper gears for axles and t-case etc..

EDIT* from another tech site
"Dana 35 rear axles have a 7.56″ diameter ring gear and only showed up on a few 2007 Sahara and X model Jeep JK Wrangler 2-Doors before being replaced by Dana 44ís. These were available with a 3.21 and an optional 4.10 gear ratio.  No limited slip or locking differential was offered for it. "

From my searches, it looked to only be the 2 door with the 35s

The rubi is a good starting point. If the 44 is what you want, get it right off the bat. the extra money you spend in the purchase price will quickly be offset when you choose to buy selectable lockers, deeper gears for axles and t-case etc..

That's what I've been thinking, but I've had a hell of a time even locating any them just to price them out. Most of the 2007 lines are all Unlimited eithe X, or Sahara. and if the Rubi is more than 2500-3K$ more I can get a 44 built out from Dyna Trak

I'll offer a bit of advise as I have a bit of experience when it comes to building a JK. First, establish what your goals are for the rig and what your realistic budget is.

Daily driver with weekend warrior duties? You best bet is to go ahead and buy a Rubicon. Although you'll hear a lot of people bash the stock lockers, they're actually pretty damn good in terms of durability. They're also pretty expensive to implement in all the other models. I've been wheeling 37" competition stickies and beat the Jeep like it owes me money and the factory D44's are holding up nicely.

As far as suspension goes, you can probably ditch the idea of needing a body lift. While it is necessary on the earlier models, JK's have absolutely huge wheel wells so clearing large tires without body work isn't an issue like it has been in the past. Fairly common for guys to wheel a 37" tire on a 2.5" lift. Long arm kits aren't really a must either. I run one on my rig, but it's not needed. Your best bet will be to select a quality short arm system that includes all 8 adjustable controls arms and adjustable track bars. Currie has the best setup by far in that department as they use Johnny Joints at both ends. Rokmen also uses JJ's in their CA's.

Research, and lots of it, before you bust out your wallet. JKOwners has a huge amount of info and technical write ups that will help guide you to making the right decision.

Also, to clarify: '07 2WD JK's had a D35, all 4WD non-rubicon models are D30 front, D44 rear, Rubicon is D44 front and rear.

Elias 4wd Center in Townsend, MA is close to Clinton.

We know JKs.  And we do pre-purchase inspections. ;)  And we can get all the right parts the first time and do all the work you need done.

Thanks for the Great info Arctic. I'm thinking along the lines of Daily driven, with Weekends in the woods, I was a BoyScout way back when, and looking forward to being out there again.... It's my understanding that this area does not have allot of the Hardcore Rock Crawling like other parts of the country, but I want a jeep that can handle the some rock also.

Lift wise I'm probably going with a 4inch standard arm lift from TerraFlex (Maybe a 1 inch body lift also), and changing out the flares. I'm thinking 37"s mostly for the look and added clearance. For Budget, I am looking to do the purchase in about 12 months, of the basic Rubi, then the mods will come as I can afford them. Looking at the tire/wheel combos I want it'll be like $2k just rims and tires alone, kick in $2500 for the lift and installation (On my own with help would be preferred, but not holding too much hope for that). and just the mods look to be 5-7K and adding up fast.

Currently I live in Clinton, and work in Framingham (36 miles each way), but my company just bought a set of buildings in Marlborough and will be moving me there when we refinish them. The commute will be 11 miles each way without Highway, so I'm targeting after the move for the Jeep Buy.

Elias, I'll definitely be by to check you guys out at some point, and definitely before I purchase the jeep for the consult.

And I wish I could find the Like button also  ;D ;D  :woot:

A 74 GMC truggy, propane, double trannys,  rear steer, propane and 38's. And a 06 TJ, stockish  with a NV 4500 that lives in Moab. All of my rigs are beaters and get used hard. The Feb run will be perfect for beginners or newbies, with stock to mildly built rigs. Yes, passengers are welcome.
Title: Re: Start here! Newbie introduction thread
Post by: Axle on January 22, 2014, 03:24:27 PM
yes, the run is moderate, i dont like to say stock friendly cause it is always more that people think it will be. you can drive stock/mildly built jeeps through the trail, but there will be bumping and scraping.and if scratches aren't your thing, you will be "close" to trees. it will challenge someone who has not wheeled before. but if you are looking to wheel, you will love it.

Title: Re: Start here! Newbie introduction thread

its not any specific event...basically since you just sent in your app....the feb run if you come is your probationary run...or if you don't go in feb, the next event that you do attend will be it.  then it goes to the next step

Happy Memorial Day (weekend that is) and thanks to those that have served. I ran into Spider yesterday and he told me that this was the nicest group of guys around.  I have been looking for a club since I got my jk in sept.  Not much done yet. Performance leveling kit, wheels, bumpers...need to re-gear soon.  By no means a hardcore wheeler anymore just want to get off road again and introduce my young boys to the experience.  Not sure if I should just fill out an app or if you prefer folks come to an event first.  Thanks for any info you can share.

Hi everybody,

I'm Collin, sent in a club app a couple weeks ago. Currently driving a WJ (I know, I know, its not a wrangler or even an XJ) that I'm looking to use to get into the world of offroading :) Haven't done much to it yet, but once I get some experience on the lesser trails I'll start with some mods  :woot:

Hoping to see ya'll on the trail soon!

Hi everyone!!! I'm Mike and I live in Worcester. I have a 2004 TJ Sport 4.0 with a 3"lift, K&N Air Intake, Stone Guards, Front Brush Guard and Lights, all types of inside goodies too, Grab Bars, Fire Extinguisher, I'm sure you get the point!!!! I've been riding off-road forever, but never joined a club. I'm saddened by how many of the trails i rode on for eons are now houses/developments, gated and prohibited accessed areas. So instead of getting into trouble with the authorities and going through all that harassment, I'm gonna become a member because I can see NEJ is the best actual organization specifically for what I want to do legally, as well as ride and meet other Jeepers!!! I started riding dirt bikes, 3 & 4 wheelers when I was young, moved up to track days and street/dirt mixes!!! When I got my jeep I knew I could use all that knowledge and see what I could do!! So, here I am!!!! Hopefully see you all real soon!!!!

Hi NEJ,

My name is Elyson and I have recently bought my second Jeep. My first was a '93 ZJ which I did some moddest tweaks as it was a daily driver ( Also right out of high school when I got it).

Fast forward more than a decade and my passion for motorsports has grown. I recently acquired a 2001 WJ Laredo bone stock, in the two months I've owned it, I did a bit of work.

So far I have a 3" Inch IRO Lift with an adjustable trackbar, Moog HD Trail boss, Bilstein 5125 dampers, RC .75 leveling kit, 1.5" hubcetric spacers and JK Moabs with OEM 255/75 17 GY SR-A tires. Been looking at the new KO2's since I had great luck with the previous A/T KO. Duratracs are also in the running.

I got the Jeep mainly as a winter beater since I have been pouring time and money into a weekend track day car for local track use (Thompson Speedway, etc.) but as soon as I got the Jeep the Mod-bug bit me.

So here I find myself wanting to meet local Jeepers for a trail ride every so often. Preferebly some family friendly atmosphere that my wife and daughter can enjoy.

I live on the outskirts of Worcester, on the Shrewsbury/Grafton line.

I would love to learn about some local trails and join a reputable/respectable club and even support the cause to keep trails open to those resposible users.

Welcome!

I would love to learn about some local trails and join a reputable/respectable club and even support the cause to keep trails open to those responsible users.

Great attitude!  The wheeling season is pretty much over for a few months, but will resume again in March-May.  There will be plenty of opportunities to get out into the woods.  99% of the events that we have are family friendly.

I also picked up a WJ for the winter.  Threw a 2" BB and some 245/75-16s under it.  8)

Thank you all for the warm welcomes!

I still need a few more things to complete my rig before I send in my application. I need the Front/Rear recovery points, CB, tow strap and a fire extinguisher. Then I will be able to chill  8)

Does a D-ring hitch receiver work as the rear recovery point ( I ask because of the NO HITCH BALLS).

Thanks again for all the information and links; from what I've read, many members of this club are nearby and this sounds like a great one to join.

hello fellow jeepsterz, I just joined. Forgive me but I am new to forums in general so this is the beginning of what i hope will be a short learning curve, haha. My 2002 laredo(wj) is my first jeep. I've had it now for 2 years. replaced lots of things(will list later).Currently I would like to find some take off 17 inch rims and would like to know about doing so. There are many on craigslist. What's needed to make this happen?....; BB,shocks(mine are spent anyway),wheel spacers.. I have replaced much of the front end suspension minus the shocks. thanks salaredo

Hello all, My name is Brian. Some of you have met me when I've ridden shotgun for Matt Buchner.  I've had fun on these events and met a lot of cool people, so I am now joining myself. I look forward to once again riding the trails just having some good ol' fashion fun..

Hey Guys (and Gals), my name is Nick from Easton, MA, I am new to this forum, just wanted to say hello. I currently own a TJ (97) and I am dropping a 6" RC lift. I had a 95 XJ with a 4.5 inch on 32's, but this is my first wrangler. I'm a "jack of all trades, master of none", but I have common sense, which is more than I can say for most. Thanks for your time and I look forward to finding some local and knowledgeable people for wheeling as well as information.

welcome to the board.  are you dropping it down from 6" or putting in a 6" lift...cause if you are putting it in, what size tires are you planning on running cause even on 37's that's too much lift.

35s, And I'm lifting it 6". I should have been more clear, my bad. and the 6" lift was kinda on a whim, I found it for $700 brand new on craigslist. I ordered a 4.5 but I couldn't beat the price. 35s will be fine for now. When I 1 ton my axles, ill upgrade my tires. I'm already regearing.

Ok. Sounds. Good.  You are gonna end up a little tall but should have no issues around here where we wheel.  I'm just under 6" but have everything but time and motivation to lower mine down.

Tippy spots where low center of gravity is helpful.

For mud and snow you can add all kinds of lift.  We stick to rocks and trails that are tippy.

Welcome. Ditto on mentioned, for 35's on a tj, most here run 3-4.5 inches of lift. Adding wheel base will net better results than adding height and ultimately fit a larger tire.

Hi I just bought my first ever jeep. I got a nice RED 2005 wrangler se. The jeep got in one accident with very minor damage to the fender flair. I want to replace the fenders with something more aggressive. Any recommendations and where should I buy? I am sure I will get the jeep part fever so site recommendations is needed. The seat belt plastic cover is pushed down on the female connector. I am wondering if it needs to be replace or I can just clip the plastic over the metal.(I saw the same thing on two other jeeps when I was searching for cars.)

4WD hardware, extreme terrain, Crown and Acton Jeep are all vendor members of NEJZ. I assume you are thinking about tube fenders?

Hey Chief!  Welcome to the forum.  Are you planning to take the rig into the woods?  If you are, I would recommend a nice set of tube fenders.  The stock ones will probably get mushed into the trees/rocks you may will encounter.   ;D

Hello Everyone,

My name is Chris and I have been a Jeep enthusiast for many years now.  I wheel a CJ7 and I have a JK that is a mall crawler.  I have only been wheeling a few times in the last couple years and I am at the use it or lose it stage with my CJ7...  I really don't want to get rid of it so I am hoping to meet some new people and get out on the trails a little more often than I recently have.

Hey guys, thanks for the add to your forum.  My name is Brendan or Steelie and I run a TJ that doesn't see pavement anymore.  I've been wheeling for 10 years or so, and mostly been running Rausch Creek.

Jay is right...and hopefully he can vouch for us, but a few of us from the South Shore are looking to meet up with some like minded people who like to go out and wheel their rigs. You guys came recommend to us, so hopefully I can join up and hit the trails with you all.

Hey folks, just joined the club a week or so ago. I picked up a military humvee some months back in hopes of wheeling with my wife and kids. I'll be honest, that was just an excuse to buy the thing! Hoping to get out on the trails with you guys this year. Buddy of mine is a member and recommended the club so here I am. I'm located in Brookline NH, if anyone is wheeling in the area let me know. Can't wait to get this thing in the woods! Look forward to meet you all.

I drive a 86CJ......ish. its a mix of a bit of everything and alot of custom homemade one off out of the norm parts. I like to be creative with it!

Hi I'm Bob, I live in Taunton MA and Morgan VT I own two jeeps a 1995 YJ base 2.5  and a 1998 TJ Sahara 4.0  they are both rebuilt from the frame up. All the work was done at Mike O'Handleys in Taunton Ma. The Jeeps are basically stock except for a 2 inch lift in both of them. The YJ I bought in Canaan  VT and the TJ came from New Bedford Ma. Both needed frame repair work and other mechanical repairs. Both Jeeps had good tubs. I'm looking forward to a Local Jeep rally or just a meet and greet.    :salute:

Good Evening All,

In 1985, I was just 7 Years old, a Man named Richard Dean Anderson started in a Little know TV Show. That show Introduced me to my love of nature, science, technology, and duck tape! That show was MacGyver! I can remember just about every episode. If you know the show, then you know what Mac Drove. Well you can guess what happen next.

Finally after many years, and many many cars and trucks, I finally purchased what I wanted and my very 1st Jeep Wrangler JK, (2014). I have to say it's quite different then my long line of FORD Trucks, Escape, Explorer, Ranger and F150. But finally I am at home. :)

Right now I have a stock 2014 JK "Freedom" edition, but I am already looking for a change of the stock wheels to the Rubi Stock Hubs, and I think they just look bad ass, I am sure that there is better ones out there. But I like the Gun Metal look of them. Also need to figure out the right trail/mud/ highway tire for the Jeep. At this point I am really looking forward to getting out on a trail and in time playing with the big boys.

All the best.
George S.

Hi guys!

I am new here, I literally just picked up my 2016 Jeep Renegade yesterday! It's not the Trailhawk, I have the Limited, but I was told that the Limited is still very capable offroad, from all of the video reviews I watched and of course the dealer tried telling me that as well. So, hello, I guess!
