Taste likes chicken
« on: November 13, 2014, 09:32:53 AM »
I am thinking about purchasing chickens.  Egg production would be primary reason; delicious succulent chicken dinner would be a secondary.

What species would be best?
Preferably something that won't wake me and the neighbors up.

What would be the ideal coop?
I have been clearing the back 1/2 of my property and ultimately I will be fencing a good portion of it.  Just outside the fence, I was thinking of building a chicken coop, with a completely enclosed outdoors area attached to keep out predators.

Someone was telling me about mobile coops that you move once a week, but are a lot smaller, any benefits?

I am thinking maybe 6-10 chicken.

I raised RI Reds for years good layers. Built my own coop with a large fenced in yard so the Hawks and Raccoons wouldn't get to them. They will need gravel to digest their food. Heating the water during freezing temps is a concern as well. 6 good layers will give you and your family plenty of eggs. State min purchase is 6 chicks.

wasn't aware of a state min purchase. I was going to mail order the chicks.  Local odanence has a maximum of 15 per acre so I would be limited to 15 as my property is just at an acre.

I was told they put a min of 6 because some parents were buying 1 or 2 chicks for their kids on Easter with no intentions of raising them. After the holiday they would let them go in the wild, if the chick didn't die from dehydration it became a meal, or both.

You'll need around 3 square foot per chicken in the coop and 5 square for your outside run. Setup a couple of perches for roosting. I always bought my chicks at my local Agway for a $1 each.

Chickens are like Jeeps. There's trail rigs and street rigs and dual duty but dual duty isn't greatest at either or. Same with chickens. There are chickens that are great layers but are boney little things that wont dress out well and there are meat production birds that don't lay worth a damn and there are dual purpose breeds. If you want eggs just swing by my house and grab a couple young layers. I have more birds than I need. Skip the 6 months waiting for chicks to grow and start laying and praying you don't have a rooster.
