I got some gift cards to sears, and was looking at some tools...

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/Compare?storeId=10153&catalogId=12605&pageNum=1&viewItems=96&sortOption=PRICE_HIGH_TO_LOW&partNumber_1=00936260000P&partNumber_2=00933182000P&partNumber_3=00937154000P&partNumber_4=00933192000P&partNumber_5=00937204000P&partNumber_6=00935154000P&prodCount=6&mv=s2f

Basically for working on my Jeep - what would you guys get? I have a basic 1/4 and 3/8 socket set already, been missing 1/2 drive/sockets and I have a good set of standard box end wrenches, looking for some decent metric ones. Which do you guys like?

personally I love my set of ratcheting wrenches from sears.  I have both standard and metric sets.  Great tools and the ratcheting end is awesome .  I also suggest a set of standard and metric high impact deep well sockets as well as a 1/2" ratchet.  Now I have snapped several 1/2" breaker bars so I actually spent a little more and bought myself the 3/4" breaker bar with a high impact 1/2 reduction adapter.  I have sleeved this with bars and jumped on it to crack axle nuts on the rustiest cars.....great investment!

I don't think I use anything but 1/2" tools anymore , but if I do I use an adapter.  I find 1/4" and 3/8" ratchets and sockets to be virtually obsolete in my tool box

I also have a set of 1/2 drive torque and allen sockets in the hardened steel flavor that prove handy all day long with my cj.  They use towque everything.  I carry up to a T65 oT70 as there are some larger torque bolts holding my seatbels in.  When ever I can I get rid of those and replace with standard hex bolts.  I am not sure how much jeep used torque bolts on later model jeeps like yours Mitch but handy to have anyway.

forgot to add.  You will need an angle grinder with a 10pk of metal cutoff wheels to start with.   Best tool I own for any project is my 4 1/2" grinder.  Most of the time before you need a wrench or socket , you need a cutter to get the old right out of your way.  If it's rusted and I bust my knuckles slipping or stripping it one time.  I just start cutting Smiley

if you're working on building a tool collection, personally i wouldn't worry too much about impact sockets... at least not in the beginning since they're expensive.  we have a 700-ish ft/lb impact wrench that we use all the time and i don't think we've ever broken a socket with it.  i've used it to get axle nuts off that i've broken breaker bars and 1/2" socket wrenches on with no problems.  all of our sockets are craftsman so if we break it we can just swap it.  we always said that if we broke a lot of sockets we'd get some impact ones but i don't think it's happened.  i can think of 2 off the top of my head that i've seen that were broken but i think they broke before getting the impact wrench.

one tool that i've used from time to time is a manual impact driver:
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00947641000P?prdNo=7&blockNo=7&blockType=L7

most recently i had to use it when removing the seats from my lj so i could spray the tub.  all of the seat bolts are torx and i have a horrible fear of stripping them since i know how much of a pita they would be to fix.  when using a wrench, if you don't have the bit perfectly straight it tries to work itself out.  i had to use it on 3 bolts this time, 1 when i did it on my last tj.  with a bolt like that you just want to get it moving so you can use a wrench to get it the rest of the way off.  others might have experience using an impact wrench on those but i liked that.  plus, if you need an impact wrench when out somewhere and don't have an air supply, good thing to have around.

i don't use it often but when i do i'm glad i have it.

Mitch, if your looking to pick a tool set from the link you posted I would recommend the 260 set or the largest set you can afford. Buying the largest set now cuts down the individual pieces you will need later.  I've seen some good tool sets go for around $50-$75 on close-out.

i totally agree with posi, buy the biggest set you can afford. individual pieces bring the sux in terms of cost.

Watch the sears online deals, I had to get more tools or my new job and picked up their complete socket set of every non impact they make for $340. It has all the 6 and 12 point, deep and shallow, 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2" sockets. I also like their profesional (smooth) wrenches over the standard ones. Screwdrivers and ratchets I am snapon all the way, but for a lot of the other stuff the craftsman is all I need.
