I go 3/4 " breaker bar and use a 3/4to1/2" high impact reducer.  More beef and more leveral= no hammer Mitch. 
oh and even better than any normal tool I use is a 4foot piece of 1.5" heavy wall pipe.  Best tool ever to sleeve a breaker bar and crack those really tough axle nuts.  Then never seize the snot out of stuff once removed

I use the hammer when the hi lift handle don't fit on the bar. I like the hammer!
