I'm coming to the end of a contract with verizon with a smartphone.
I have been shopping around and am completely disgusted at the availability of plans/phones out there now.
I've crunched just about every option I have thought of (with the big 4 carriers for this area)
Tmobil
sprint
at&t
Verizon

Now i know there are cheaper options if you don't want a smartphone or can deal with older phones but for example I'm going to use the S5 galaxy because thats what I was looking at.
So contractually Tmobile and Sprint are the only two services offering unlimited data at the moment, and you'll pay out the wazzoo if you want more than 2Gb a month with the other two(which i personally think is a joke) because it is pretty much guaranteeing an overage if you ever stream music or porn or if your like me and leave stuff running in the background until your battery runs out or your girlfriend uses your phone.
Verizon comes in as being the most uneconomical from a wallet's point of view.
ATT being a little better by offering 3Gb, giving a little less chance for overages. whoopty doo.
both of these plans offer the S5 for 199 with 2 yr contract. and at the end of the day your plan be-it a 70-75$ plan, it winds up being just shy of $90 after "fees" and taxes. thats IF you don't go over your data.
that is too much in my eyes.

So now you start considering the lesser of the two companies which you hear from many people having spotty reception and customer service but the largest 4GLTE network (whatever the F that even means)
These companies advertise their plans at around $60 a month but sprints tricky because by lowering their monthly plan BASELINE and adding a larger service fee ($25, read the fine print) It plops you right back up into same range of Verizon and ATT with your monthly charge. ALSO if you have corporate/family discounts it only applies to the base rather than the older more expensive plan which saved you a few extra dollars because its deducted from the larger amount. win win for the big guys.
T mobil, unllimited is advertized at $80. add taxes and activation fees, No real bargain if you ask me only thing they have an up on is the unlimited data.
not to mention whatever you decide you want you better like it because your stuck with it for two years.

My gut says hey go look at the prepaid plans. so verizon and sprint are a Joke when it comes to their prepaid plans as is T mobil in my opinion because all three give you limited access and usability of the infamous 4GLTE.
so reveals itself, AT&T's Gophone plan. genious. Why isn't everyone on this plan? Its unlimited talk text and data for $60 a month plus tax. NO service fees because hey. you OWN your phone and aren't getting subsidized costs through the carrier and paying them extra for your "discounted phone"
only catch is you have to pay for the phone upfront. half of us would spend more than that on fuel for a weekend.
plus your sim activated not locked into one carrier change when you want. hate the phone you got? sell it and buy one you want.
AM I missing something here or is the rest of the world under a blanket? why are we locking into contracts and bowing to the Mystery charges and "extra fees" on our bills? (my favorite is verizons $3.99 charge if you want a "detailed" bill) Isn't that illegal? we're going to charge you extra to show you what we charge you for. HAHA.
Frig, i could keep on going on and on, but lucky for you guys I have to sign off now.

Please disgust, er i mean discuss  :woot:

I also wanted to state that I am excluding family and share plans because I am a loser and I have no friends

Me and the wife pay $59, 2 phones with 3 gigawhatts of 4g or what ever it calls, unlimited text and voice.  That price is pre tax and with federal employee discount.  Not sure if the plan is available, we have had this plan since mid 2000's and have been out of contract for about 5 years.

been using straighttalk for about 3 years now. $45/mo for "unlimited". Currently using a Samsung Note II  (AT&T 4GLTE Straightalk Sim) and could not be happier.

I also cut the cable and use internet/OTA for my television about 9 years ago.... free TV is great.

john i'm talking about single line plans. the game changes when you have friends more than one line on one plan.

Mitch tell me more about this TV thing. do you get the bruins?

just get a good powered antenna (kind of like our parents used way back in the day) and put your tv into a computer (get a TV Tuner card for your PC) Run a media center.

I do not get "the sports channels" but there are plenty of places to stream sports and other television for free, however, tv picture quality may not always be great.

"free tv" isn't for everyone

I'm trying to figure out a way that I can still get to watch F1 without having a cable TV/Dish subscription.

i have had sprint since 2000 and currently have it on 3 phones.  I've had unlimited data my entire smartphone life and i could never live without that feature. (first world problem for sure.)  someday thinking back to metered mobile data will be like remembering back to dial-up metering of  internet minutes.

95% of the time my tv is on, it is steaming something off the internet.  the rest is either live sports or jeopardy.

side note:
if any of you guys have netflix watch "peaky blinders".  its pretty cool.
i am an AMSOIL dealer! pm me for a quote

I'm trying to figure out a way that I can still get to watch F1 without having a cable TV/Dish subscription.

Tim you can stream it from NBCsports.com i sometimes throw it on while i'm in the garage or at work etc. I usually get to watch them live because they are on late at night in the US and thats when I'm usually up. I think you need a login from comcast or directv like i do when i stream the bruins games on nbcsn. I can give you my login if you ever need to.
Not sure why anyone would want to watch anyways, It's no longer a race. it's nothing but a game of follow the Mercedes. This season was pretty disheartening.

I have ting for my personal phone carrier.   It's not unlimited you pay what you use.
Flip side is I use very little, so my bill is always less than 20 bucks a month.
If you use more go with strait talk in my opinion.

Yeah, it was quite the downfall for Vettel.  I was pulling for Rosberg.  I can't really stand Hamilton.  He's too full of himself.

I'm excited for 2016 with Hass automotive joining the ranks. And now that Honda is with McLaren, maybe we will see some more competition.
