so for the past few weeks or so I have been having some strange issues with my brakes, sometimes pulling left hard when braking hard, rear locking up when its damp out, and then most recently (monday)when trying to reverse my rear passenger tire would just drag, and brakes would lock up going forward. So after getting the xj home I jacked up the rear, removed the tires and drums and finally inspected them.
This is what I found on the rear passenger shoe ( the side pointing to the ass end of the jeep).

my father in law has no idea how the shoe was damaged like that.

moral of this short fractured story, don't be a moron like me, and if having brake issues of any kind, check them asap, I am so very lucky I that during hard braking I did not lose control and hurt/kill anyone.
Hindsight is 20/20 but looking at this I wish I had better common sense.

I'm sure there is more to the story.

I see the pin on the ground in the first pic, was the spring and retainer intact when you removed the shoe?

A broken spring or retainer would cause the shoe to torque when the service or e-brake was applied.

Side note: I understand your working outside, but I would recommended whenever working on brakes slide a pan under your work and brush on mineral spirits soaking everything down.....your lungs will thank you!

Possibly. However when I got in there everything was intact. Nothing was loose or damaged other than that one part of the shoe.
