my plasma breaks 20 seconds into using it for the first time

bring it to get serviced

2 weeks later (today) i get a call saying a new mother board will be $1,000 plus labor but they'd offer me $150 for the gun.  blow me....

i say what about my waranty?  welding shop says it an old model and it was up when i got it.

i call hobart tech support (again) and they say while my machine is 5 years old (but bought new on 9/24/09) they will waranty it anyway, but i have to wait for a copy of my receipt to come in the mail now from sears.

once i get this back, i won't give hobart another penny.  ( i know miller owns them and someone else owns miller yada yada)

Is this the one you just bought through Sears a couple months ago?  How can it be 5 years old but just purchased 5 months ago?

ever hear of old new stock Jeff?
Its fancy terminology for it was manufactured years ago but we have it on our shelves still so it's consider brand new still.

Just glad your investment wasn't a total waste and that you'll be up and running still eventually.  I am just surprised with the cost of that equiptment that it wasn't made better.  Maybe it was a glitch or sheer coinsidence

i got a call saying that they wouldn't fix it.  waranty was over and it was going to cost $1008.00 to fix.

while they are now covering it, it was because i had to call and talk to the service guy, the hobart tech guy, sears, etc. i now have to hand deliver the receipt to the service guy (i have to back into everett....that sucks! Roll Eyes) and wait another 2 weeks.

right but in the end it will get fixed, i mean your plasma (according to manufacturing date) is 5 years old. how else would they deal with it?  this what any shop would do if you brought a 5 year old machine in.  i guess my question is how come you don't have the receipt in your hand currently?

maybe shops you deal with should handle things like this?

"oh sure, we will take your word for it cause you look like an honest guy"

come on now!!!

your machine is getting fixed! it won't cost you anything. i don't see the issue

first hand story (my dodge truck)

motor locked up with 60k miles on it (locked up driving down road)  throws rod through corner of block and pan. dodge calls me and says it will cost me $10K to remove and replace motor (absolutl true story here)  i ask about warranty they state we will have to check on that for you. i ask about 100k mile warranty. service rep says he doesn't know that warranty program. i call attorney general, truck was fixed for free and got a written apology from dealership.  it took them a month to remove and replace engine, i was out my truck all that time (now keep in mind i build houses for a living, no truck equals very hard time for me) i was still happy i got my truck fixed for free!

companies mostly sux now a days!  its just a fact of life. produts aren't built as good as they used to be! oh well!

like i said, atleast it is getting fixed for free.

if they had said "go pound sand! your plasma is 5 years old" i would agree with you. but not on this one

I think the point Ian is trying to make is it shouldn't be this hard. I can understand that they want a receipt but even if it is old stock and you buy it today it should still have a warantee unless you are specifically told when you buy it. I don't think that is unreasonable.

I have never looked at the date of manufacture for a warantee it is always based on the day it is purchased. If they want to offload a bunch of capital goods in their warehouse to make room for new product and they don't want to have a warantee all they need to do is say so. Then the buyer can decide if it is worth the discount.

Todd your story sounds like a typical stealership. It's sad and that blows...

if i didn't call hobart directly i wouldn't have been able to get it fixed underwaranty.

i don't have a copy of my receipt because i bought it online and must have deleted the email.  because i bought it with my sears card it was easy and painless to get one mailed to me.

when i called hobart the first time they said as long as they could read the serial number i wouldn't need a receipt so i didn't dig it out.

brooksy, on all hobart material the waranty starts on date of purchase or one year after the manufacturing date.
