The VEHICLE makes a strange noise when driving. It only makes when I'm on the throttle in every gear. When i let go it is quiet as if nothing has happened. It sound as if I am in a car with race gears or the same as a standard in reverse. Just a wining noise. Coud this be due to low levels of fluid because i noticed the transfer case leaks? Because i hope is just that but I'm beging to learn that it is never that easy on a jeep. Angry I got the rear axle and bearings and seals changed so I know it is not the rear end.
PS: Would a trans and case fit from a 4.0 grand Cherokee or is it longer because of the overdrive?

I assume you have an automatic transmission?  Does it make the sound if you put the t-case in N and the trans in D?

I would try to isolate each part as best you can.  It could be any number of things.

Without knowing more about the transmission models in the YJ and a ZJ/WJ, we can't give you a good answer.  I know that it was very common for Jeep to use different transmission and transfer case models in different vehicles.  The XJ for the AW4/231.  The ZJs got a Chrysler transmission and the 249.  And I have no clue what came with the YJs.

Do the basic, check fluid levels first.

I checked the fluids. Trans was fine and transfcase was low a quart. Toped it off and the noise is still there. Could i have damaged a bearing or a gear because of the low fluid level?

It’s hard to diagnose a noise over the internet more info would help.

How many miles?

Auto or manual transmission?

If manual what tranny?

What transfer case do you have? NP231 ?

What fluid did you top off the t-case with?

It may not have anything to do with the noise your hearing but I can tell you the t-case needs new seals. I’m not sure how long you have been driving with the t-case half empty but it won’t help the bearings or the chain if it’s an NP231. Needing to add 1 quart is a lot when the case only holds a little over 2 quarts.

Are you the original owner? Is it possible the previous owner installed race gears?

sounds like the converter is junk, I fore-see a trans rebuild in your future.

It is an auto. No my GF did not put race gears in it. (I f-ing wish she would have checked the oil level.) No idea on the transfer-case type it just had dates on the plate. I put the transfer-case in neutral and then the trans in drive and there was no noise. So I was thinking transfer-case but there was no load on the transmission after all. I guess i will wait until something falls on the ground.  Cry
