« on: August 06, 2007, 03:07:45 PM »

So I was getting some pretty bad vibrations in my jeep.  The driver's wheel hub was trashed, and the pass is in OK shape.  I replaced the driver's side hub, and also disconnected the front driveshaft.  The vibes went away for the most part, but on my way to work this morning the jeep is making horrible sounds coming from the transfer case and it started vibrating my teeth out.  I was going like 55 at the time.  I stop, look under the car, and the housing to the transfer case is shattered and there's fluid covering everything.  Did this happen because I had a LP 30 and the angle was off?  For mods I have a 1" poly motor lift, 1" body lift, 2" budget boost and 33s.  I also have a poly trans. mount.  I can't think of why it would just shatter like that...

Where exactly does the crack appear to start. I don't think your mods you listed would be the cullprit. Generally the Pinion U-joint would be the first thing to blow up, then the Tcase... and that is far more common in a rear application and not the front.

I tend to agree with Adam, You got junk.  Didn't you drive around for like 3 weeks with just the front axle? and recently didn't you put in a SYE?

No, that was RMTJ, not me.  I don't have a sye yet.  I havn't had time to really look at it yet as I'm still at work and in my work clothes, but the entire back is shattered.

All the vibration seemed to be coming from the front end though.  When I took off the front driveshaft, the vibration became significantly less.

This is alittle far fetch, but there is a possibility that your front output U joint went bad and maybe from the out of balance rotation broke something inside the t-case. It is particularly hard to diagnose with out seeing..

yup that was me that ran in front wheel drive for about 2 weeks, had to do it again when i lost my rear driveshaft in boston traffic, that was fun, breaking on pavement.  The sye solved all driveline vibes, i do have a steering wheel shake that wont go away even with proper tire balance (though they dont stay balanced long)

what looks like what happened is the front shaft was pushed through the back of the case, shattering it completely.  The belly pan was full of pieces of the case...woohoo

and if i can find a 231 for that cheap I might buy one as a spare, or maybe just save up for something stronger.
