thats exactly what i want to do in my cj..3:1 in my d-20.
i'm only around 40:1 right now..but i do find the wheel speed on new england trails to be beneficial. i think the torque of the 360 helps out a bit too..

for new england type four wheeling your ratio is "ok" generally the ideal ratio for a stick is 80 to 1 and higher. my old cj was 89 to 1 and i loved it.
if you are going to swap gears (and this is what i tell everyone who is into 4 wheeling) get the lowest gears you can possibly run. you will loose top end speed but not enough to matter

todd your cj crawls nice..once i drove it i realized how much more control you have going that slow. i'd like to be around that range in my cj. hopefully this winter i will add the 3:1, it's either that or i regear. my rear ring and pinion are beat anyway, i might consider re-gearing both axles. i'm not sure if i can just get away with just gearing the axles to gain the lowrange i want. any suggestions ?

regear the axles, 5.38 i always told lucas he was to high
the t-case regear is cheaper but you will be wanting more

So i figured I would follow up on this after doing it. I ended up going with a 5.14 gear ratio. I immediately noticed a big improvement on the dry rocks when I was at gretchens, but also found it to be a little low on the slick stuff when we were at swanzey. I'm going to need a little time to figure out just when to use what gear, but at least now I have the option. Now I need to get that suck down winch done.

One thing people forget when talking about crawl ratio is what engine you have and where it makes it's torque. My 258 makes crazy low end but redlined a 3000 rpm so wheelspeed is kinda lacking but my 2 nd gear is around 60 to 1
