I have a 98 tj with a 2.5L with about 107,000 miles. I give her full synthetic oil changes about every 5,000 miles or so. Doesn't leak a drop of oil and never had a problem.
Today i hear a knocking from the engine and it gets faster as i hit the gas and she's burning oil and blowing white smoke from the exhaust.
Blown ring? cracked piston? is there any hope left for my engine? any advice? thanks

I have never heard good things about Synthetic oils they really are not good for seals.  Sounds like a head gasket and a stuck rod.

Do a compression test.

Nothing wrong with synthetic oil

Switching to synthetic on a high mileage engine is said to cause seal leaks

didn't over heat...yet. and since it has 107,000 on the ticker, looks like i should go to regular oil then. the smoke is white but it smells like it's burning oil though

white smoke is coolant, you blew a head gaskey is my guess?

is there coolant in the oil?

check compression as chuck said

do you have goo doil pressure? any oil pressure?

how do you know its using oil? did you check it fill it and check again after driving and it was low?

How does the exhaust smell? Should be able to tell the diff between the 2. Coolant has a bit of an odd sweet smell while oil smells like a fresh paved road. Best analogy I could think of lol

great job on the analogy..lol exhaust doesn't smell sweet at all but can't really tell about the paved road smell. gave her an oil change about 3 weeks ago and the oil still looks new and the antifreeze looks great too. gotta get that compression test done. gotta get a gauge and never done one...gotta youtube it

You should be able to rent one from the parts stores,  general idea is you pull a plug and bolt it in then crank the engine.   Then repeat that for each cyl.  At least thats how I've done it in the past.
I think I pulled the wire to fuel or coil so it would not fire as well.

i have compression but a mechanic friend of mine said it might be a rod. anyone familiar with the 2.5 willing to come take a quick look to see if i can still save my engine before i start looking for another 2.5 to swap in? if you willing to take a drive out to lend a hand, i'd cover your gas. any help at all would be really appreciated. it's my daily driver, so thank god i live close to work
