Title: I need a tube mandrel bent. 1.25 OD 0.095 Wall Post by: Casey L on March 09, 2010, 02:49:53 PM Hey Everyone,
I need to get 10 foot section of 1.25 OD x 0.095 Wall DOM tubing bent to my specifications. The main hoop must be a continuous high quality bend. A first attempt at using an Oxy torch has failed, I need to have the hoop bent on a mandrel bender. (http://lh6.ggpht.com/_VUaI7bsfmok/S5aleQFWrDI/AAAAAAAACCI/YLbGYpg3Ous/10002-for%20bending.JPG) Does anyone here have the ability or would like to help me out. It is for the UMass Lowell Formula SAE Racecar. The main hoop radius can be plus or minus 2 inches or so. I also have a pervious attempt at the roll hoop that I can bring with me to show you what the bend should look like. We are willing to pay for any services. If you would like to sponsor us with your time all money is tax deductable. It is not in our budget to buy a JD^2 bender at the moment but we may be able to buy the die if that is required. Thanks! Also, I would like to see pics of the build of this car if/when they are "declassified". :) Title: Re: I need a tube mandrel bent. 1.25 OD 0.095 Wall Post by: Casey L on March 09, 2010, 03:11:25 PM (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2765/4093056421_b2c40cae2f.jpg)

Title: Re: I need a tube mandrel bent. 1.25 OD 0.095 Wall Post by: Casey L on March 09, 2010, 03:19:03 PM I don't know yet, it has not driven yet! :o It is still in a prototype status. We redesigned the torsen differential and mounting system and we have to chop the frame up to fix the roll hoop.
But realistically they top out at about 90MPH. It is a 600cc GSX-R Motor with a 25mm intake restrictor. He bent tube for me before to my specs and I am sure he can help you out!!

I have a friend that has one, I will PM you his info Unless something has changed recently, Bob definately has a mandrel bender. Title: Re: I need a tube mandrel bent. 1.25 OD 0.095 Wall Post by: jps4jeep on March 11, 2010, 01:37:59 PM As far as I know Bob has a tube bender, JD2 I believe, not a mandrel bender. a mandrel bender would use a flexible mandrel placed inside the tube/pipe, a pressure die and wiper die to keep the equal diameter then entire length of a bend. Bob's tube bender does not have that capability as far as I know. If I am wrong, then I am wrong.

I have a few 1.5" dies. if you want some weekend stop up and we can see if it can be done. I dont have any crazy compass' or protractors etc to measure exact degrees though.
let me know. Title: Re: I need a tube mandrel bent. 1.25 OD 0.095 Wall Post by: jon on March 18, 2010, 11:44:03 AM As far as I know Bob has a tube bender, JD2 I believe, not a mandrel bender. a mandrel bender would use a flexible mandrel placed inside the tube/pipe, a pressure die and wiper die to keep the equal diameter then entire length of a bend. Bob's tube bender does not have that capability as far as I know. If I am wrong, then I am wrong. There are a variety of definitions for Mandrel Bender. Yours is correct, but most of the world considers a JD2 style bender a "mandrel" bender as opposed to a "shoe" bender like in harbor freight. As the tubing is drawn over the die instead of forcibly bent. Very few places have a true mandrel bender(per your definition), and those that do are usually production houses. Most that I have seen don't use a flexible mandrel, but actually use a steel ball attached to a long rod that is held inside the tube. You are more likely to see a NC tubing bender at an exhuast shop or the like. I am quite familiar with Formula SAE and know a few of the people writing the rules. They are using the term mandrel bender to differentiate between the "kink-o-matic" shoe style bender. There was an issue with cages being built with the harbor freight tools or the "Torch and twist" method. They had kinks or locally anealed areas and were deforming badly when a rollover occurred. They changed the cage rules at that time. The JD2 or pro-tools bender everybody has should be fine for his need.
