I need help with tires and gears
«

So as u know I'm back, but the jeep has some small issues. One of them being I need new tires. With it Being my dd at the moment the 37's are a little big. Love them but hate them. The jeep is a 4.0 auto with 4.88 gears. This is my first auto jeep so I'm at a loss when it comes to gearing. Would it be a bad idea to drop to 35's or should I just suck it up and stick with a set of 37's.

I'm running 4.56's with 33's and a v8 and wish I had gone with 4.88's.

35's will be great honestly. I think 35 + 4.88 puts you to around a stock gear ratio. I ran 4.88 w/ 33" tires for years on my xj which is lower than stock ratio, it was fine but would run above 3000rpm on the highway.

What axles do you have? 30/35, 30/44, 44/44?
In my Jeep, with an auto and 5.38s, it felt like stock with 37s. You could put some 5.13s in if you have 44/44.

This.
Also a more street friendly tire might help

from his "im back" thread, it looks like he has dana 44s.
I drove my tj (05 with a 6 speed manual) with 36" tires and stock 3.73 gears for a few years, never driven a jeep with an auto so Im not sure how the trans gears cross over. How does it drive right now? If you are planning on 35s I would put them on and then see how it does before spending the $ to regear it. Why spend money before you need to? just my opinion though

That's right.
Fence post holes should be at least 3' deep.

It drives mint right now. I've never driven a jeep that I can let go of the steering wheel on the highway at 75mph and still go straight. It's crazy. The shop that built it for the previous owner did it right.
It is just ideas at the moment... I've got 44s front and rear. Front is fully built. Rear is just gears and locker. I really miss the 5spd.

Yes it's easier but it doesn't crawl down hill at all. It just crawls for a second and the. Just unloads the torque cinverter and I have to ride the brakes the rest of the way. Unless there is a mod to fix that that I haven't come across yet.

Meh...I used to be an automatic only guy. Then I started wheeling with enough transfer case gear reduction to crawl with a stick. Game changer! I don't think I'll ever go back to an automatic now...stick shift with 100:1 (or more...doubler make for nice choices) gets it done for me
