hey guys
i have an 87 4 runna with a 22re motor, it was sputtering and hesitating. I thought it was the exhaust leak. I put in in new donut gaskets. I then threw plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter at it to make sure those weren't an issue either. i took it for a ride and didn't seem any better. when i got it back to the shop i saw the CAT was glowing red! I then figured it was the cat, so i replaced it.
It is NO Better at all and the new cat is glowing too!
What should i look at next??The muffler is recent too.
I feel like it is dragging a boat anchor and sputtering still!!
Please help, any one ever run into this???

I think when the cat is red that means it is running rich. Did you try an o2 sensor, plugs and wires. Maybe clean out the MAF?

Sounds like an o2 sensor or a broken MAF.

On a side note, my friend is building up a turbo 22re and it looks sweet!!!!

I'm not sure if you will get codes from a 1987.  I know OBD-II came into existance in 1996...thats on Jeeps, not sure about Toyotas though.

Good luck Jay  Smiley

thanks tim
this does have a midevil diagnostic check so,
i jumped the diagnostic code box and it is reading 5 flashes, O2 sensor.
does this make sense??
it really runs like a$$
i just don't want to keep throwing parts at it but, it does read o2.

o2 sensor controlls the richness of the air/fuel ratio.  if its bad, then the motor is running REALLY rich.

at carnage, my MJ had an o2 sensor with the wires cut off, and it ran fine.  do what casey suggested and try the o2 sensor.

can you get one from a JY?  getting a new o2 sensor for $80 and then findint out its not the part would reallly suck!

you are correct, that would suck to get a new one and not have it be it.
i looked up the diagnostic codes though, that is what the truck (and others) have told me.
the YJ o2 sensor is way different than this (of course)
i'll see in the morning what the deal is
thanks for the input guys
i'll keep ya posted.

Twisty said JY (junkyard), not YJ.  Grin

Just to make sure there is no restriction in the exhaust, disconnect it after the cat and run it.  It is possible something got stuck down inside the muffler (if the old cat did go bad).

i agree with woody on the plugged muffler possibility, my old cat went bad and the entire guts ended up inside the flowmaster and had it almost totally clogged.  but if the truck is telling you the O2 sensor is bad, i would start there.

JY ha ha ha  i was thinking YJ that's funny!!!
I did try to disconnect it at the cat w/o the muffler,
it did not run any better.
