I've got a 2" X 4" tubular rear bumper and looking to fabricate a tire carrier to carrier a 35".  A friend of mine mentioned he saw a good plan that used a trailer axle spindle, and it seemed beefy enough.  Does anyone have a tire carrier they fabricated and can send some pictures/plans, or has anyone seen a link online to a decent carrier?

Keep in mind that the spindle needs to be at least 1" dia.  The spindle must pass through the bumper and be welded in double sheer.  Also the swing gate should be mounted a few degrees high at the latch end so when the weight of the tire is on it it will be parallel to the bumper. use a good quality latch that seems to be overkill, otherwise it will rattle and cause metal fatague.  The bumper need to be securely mounted to the frame of the jeep.  On the TJ there are four mounting holes inside the rear crossmember, two on each side outside of the crossmember and two under at the ends of the frame rails.  The two outside holes should be tied into the frame with "L" brackets.  A 35" wheel/tire can weigh upwards of 80#.  This weight is worse when suspended 12"off a swing gate and bouncing down the road/trail.
