depends on teh year tj, 03 and after no, pre 03, the block and heads should swap no problem with a 94. you will need to use the 94 ecm, emissions, intake etc..

I figured I might as well use this posting instead of taking up space with a new one - - Will a 4.0L out of a 98 cherokee drop into a 97 wrangler that had the 2.5(obviously new motor mounts will be needed) But is there any difference from the cherokee 4.0L to the TJ 4.0L?

No it will not drop in, tranny will not bolt up. motor mounts will not work, ecm will not work.

The only difference between teh 97 tj and 98 xj 4.0 is the manifold is a little different, but doesn't effect a swap. I think they went to coiless ignition in 01

I already knew I would have to buy new motor mounts and just wasn't sure if there was any difference in the engines  - I have the XJ complete as a parts rig so I can take everything - I was planning on swapping entire drivetrain, minus axles

So if I use the XJ tranny and computer and just buy TJ 4.0L motor mounts it will work ??

in theory yes, but not that simple. the XJ tranny is computer controled, so you will need a BCM for a 4.0 auto. The old motor mounts will need to be cut off, and new ones located and welded.  Also I think the T-case will not bolt up, the auto is a 23 spline and the ax5 is 21 spline, I could have that wrong though, I forget. When all said and done, you could probably put a 5.3L/4l60E chevy in for the same price (assuming you already don't have teh tranny and 4.0)

I have the entire XJ so I can take whatever I need from it.  So I already have engine, tranny, transfer. and all wiring.  My buddy needed cash so I bought the the whole rig for $500 with him only selling doors and lights - I wanted to do a v8 swap but I wouldn't be able to pass NH inspection unless its over 15 yrs old.  My other friend that works at a garage said if I do this swap I could get it inspected easily if I chage computers and the only problems I might run into is it being a 97 and coming up 98 thru computer but I have a 98 TJ parts jeep that I could just steal vin plate and title from to make it a 98 to match

If the pc tells the person it's a 98 and not a 97, tell them you just got a new ECM from the Junk Yard when your old one wasn't working.  nothing illegal about it.

Oh ok - I was debating om switching tubs if I had to but that is def easier - - Ok, so other that cutting motor mounts and welding new ones, the swap is pretty routine? I know i will prob have to do some minor modification for new shifter but thats no big deal either.  My main issue was if there was any big difference in the motor or tranny that would hold me up
