leave it where it is. if you indeed go 4wheeling and need to get it out. the location behind the seat will be a pita.
most guys i know have it mounted where you do currently

After my tire delima im gonna check first no matter ho badly i get flamed I just hope you don't have any passangers or have to put a soft top on. Leave it where it is and just get some fence post bracket. They are the right lenght and if you take the base of the hi lift off, it fit's much better

Trav,
I guy I know in another club has it mounted where you were proposing. He likes it there and says it fits fine even with the hard top on. To Todd's point, I guess it depends on how often you are using it and it you mind taking it down (or more importantly, putting it back) from that location when you really need it. I have mine in a similar location to yours but I put bolts/posts for it to sit on thru the rear fender wells. The LoD carrier I ordered has a place for the hi-lift but I believe you have to take the bottom base off and it would be exposed to the outside elements.

I also say leave it where it is. If you ever have to get it out in a hurry, i think its the most convenient location. Either that or just strap it into the passenger seat with the seatbelt.

I don't have a pic, but we followed a rubicon all through Paragon last year and he had a spare tire mount for his hilift...and had it HORIZONTAL...so it stuck out past the tub on both sides. Without a hardtop...we watched it get hit by branches and bushes, and figured the first time he rolled a little to one side and that hilift grabbed a good sapling or tree-he'd rip the entire spare tire bracket right off the back of the rig. The smartest ones I've seen have them down on the hood, in front of the windshield (one bracket has light bar also) and other custom bumpers have built in hold downs for them. Nice and secure, and right where you need them.

i dont think that is the smartest, hi lifts suck when you leave them outside in the elements and that other guy your talking about probably had the 60" hi lift in order for it to stick out that much

I took the shifter out of my jeep and use my HI-lift instead although it was real easy, I made a simple bracket that extends from the rear left tire shifting linkage up to the fender resevour. I had to use a nickle rod to weld the cast 84" HI-lift to the rear seat bracket but I felt confident that it would be best to put it there so it does not shatter when it gets cold outside, regardless, when I go from 2nd to 7th gear I get this little death wobble vibration in my wheel spacers so I painted the HI-lift green and now all is right with the world.
