I agree with what Todds is saying.

A few things I picked up over the years, yes a Chevy 60 is normally cheaper and better geared ( most are 4.10 and 4.56 ) and normally a 14 bolt rear is not far away from the same truck.
But allmost 90% of the Chevy 60's you will find now are DRW witch will need a hub swap, seeing how the GM part number for the hubs from the dealer are allmost impossable to find now that means after market hubs or machineing down the DRW.

For a CJ, well Chevy ( and dont forget Dodge ) will be the best option, since theres no work thats needs to done to drop them on the pass side.

Ford 78/79's come at a high cost now, even junk yards no this now. But if you find one for decent money all most all of them are going to be SRW, so thats a plus and they bolt right in place on a YJ.
But some of there down side's are neck down inner shafts and 3.55's are allmost standard, 4.10's are very hard to find. And thats it for gearing in a Ford from the factory.

I like the newer 85 up Fords, alot of them can be found with 41.10s and SRW hubs. They all have the NON neck down inner shafts and better brake caliper cailpers. I would even consider a Ford  balljoint 60.
Down side to the newer axle's ( 85 and up ) is a outboard is needed or a narrow job to get them on them in the front.

Stock stubs will live with 37-39's  as long as your somewhat easy on the gas, I got 6 years out of my axle before I broke a factory stub, that was with 39 Iroks and good tire placement when I wheeled thanks to good spotters.

The point of pulling a d300 into a yj is for the pass drop to match the gm 60 no need to flip, regardless, great info.

Are late 70 ford d 60 still getting top dollar or has it relaxed some?

depends on the seller.

i have seen a few go for $250 lately.  but Rick Boiros still wants a pretty penny (and is the reason they were so high)

Bob might want to remember that those front & rear narrowed 60's for drop in spring over CJ are still available.
Welded 4.88's I believe.  You will just need the outers & shafts for the front.
Might be the fastest way to get the 60 swap done.
Oh the front was a high pinion pass drop.
Just throwing out there.
