It matters if you want to twin stick the 20.

You would need to modify the shift rail or remove the pill to use the axles independently in a CJ 20 case.

A FSJ case has a u-shape shift pattern so there is no need to modify the rail or remove the pill to use the axles independently with a twin stick setup.

The FSJ case is slightly larger as well, but not a enough to make a difference.

Shift pattern is standard CJ  From the front   4hi-2hi-N-4low

Do you have any documentation on the shift patterns/linkage?  Mine makes an awful noise, and does not seem to make sense how one shifts it (very small movements to go in/out of gears).  The only gear that seems to engage in a way I imagine is 4-low.  2wd and 4wd hi are very touchy to find and the gears grind when you're on/off the gas.

Maybe the previous owner put the wrong case/linkage combination together?

The CJ case has a shorter shifter arrangement and the truck case has the longer shifter arrangement.

The truck U shape:

upper left 2wd
lower left 4wdHIGH
lower right neutral
upper right 4wdLOW.

Thanks,  Also I was browsing pirate and Bill Vista has a good write up on his D20 build.  He has a full table of hi/low positions I am going to run through.

It’s possible you have shift rail wear and/or broken detent springs.

The more I read about the internal designs the more this seems likely.  I ordered a rebuild kit today.
