jk Mithiepoo Did you have a tow strap already? If not Walmarts cheap $20 Whats the plan with making it a DD with no way to connect for emmissions. too bad it wasn't a 95 for emmissions reasons. oh..... ::) and how about updating your freakin AVATAR ;) Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: XJFever on August 11, 2010, 07:39:40 PM that jeep is sexy....I died alittle on the inside looking at my jeep :D

Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Mitch on August 11, 2010, 08:59:17 PM Tim, challenge accepted!
Thanks for the comments guys. :) BigD - Joe since replaced the power wire and ECU, but hadnt taken it to inspect after. So I will be crossing my fingers that day - UNLESS someone here can PM me a guy they know that like beer/etc... :) I know that it wont be too much of a build thread, but I am going to at least try and document everything I do with it. Maybe it someday it wont be a DD anymore.... think about it! I also thought about the emissions thing, but I dont want a loud XJ, so the emissions should be a problem, if I could only figure out how to keep the tailpipe from rattling off the gas skid that would be premium (and no, I dont want to cut it off and have my child breathing all the fumes while Idling - recent horror story about that I would rather not experience first hand). And about my avatar - I still own that dodge and can use it if I want to! :-* I do think I want a new rear bumper with tire carrier though.... where is that jasonm guy at?? ;D Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: BiGdAdDeE on August 11, 2010, 09:16:20 PM you still own it? (http://inlinethumb12.webshots.com/45131/2893720780094889508S425x425Q85.jpg) (http://inlinethumb33.webshots.com/45920/2377183600094889508S425x425Q85.jpg) before they were finished. the 2 x 2 box is under the 2 x 6 and there is now a piece of uhvm (cutting board white plastic stuff) plus all the open ends on box tube is capped now (http://inlinethumb36.webshots.com/47651/2644670390094889508S425x425Q85.jpg) (http://inlinethumb10.webshots.com/46729/2589400600094889508S425x425Q85.jpg) that looks like a nice xj mitch, don't name your project thread! ::) when your ready to come on down wheeling at rausch creek let me know. ;D Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Mitch on August 12, 2010, 06:50:38 AM Hi Todd, Those rockers came out really nice! Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: jps4jeep on August 12, 2010, 08:14:48 AM regarding the o2 sensor, to get the vehicle to pass, you can get a phantom o2 sensor.. I am not positive that is the name, I will have to search, but the import tuner guys use these to fool the ECM into thinking that the o2 senor is connected and working properly. you unplug the sensor and plug this one in, basically, it sends the computer the proper voltage readings that a working and functional o2 would send. not sure if I completely understand why yours would not connect or even if this would be the best solution, but thought I would mentioned it.
Good Luck. Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: X-BoB-J on August 12, 2010, 08:15:11 AM OBDII connector
#4 - Chassis Gnd #5 - Signal Gnd #7 - K #15 - L #16 - +12V on my jeep pin number 4 was not grounded. so i cut it and grounded it in the cab. that fixed my problem. Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Mitch on August 12, 2010, 08:25:55 AM Thanks guys, it may connect now - it hasnt been tried since he last replaced parts. But this is some excellent tech for me should I need it.
What year is your XJ Bob? Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: X-BoB-J on August 12, 2010, 08:27:18 AM 99 but same connector, 96 then went to OBDII, just plug in a OBDII reader and if it reads it should pass inspection.

This is a test, as there isnt really anything for a 96 XJ with a Ford 8.8 w/ Disc brakes available that I could find. So I ordered 2x Part #: DB05 from Jeff at Crown. Thanks Jeff! Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Mitch on August 15, 2010, 06:14:10 PM I attempted to do the ball joints today, and honestly I am a little intimidated by the amount of breakdown I need to do to get them in. I got the big nut off the passenger side and didnt have the 12 point socket I need to go forward, so I wound up just changing the brakes out. The new brakes are nice, my new phone is no longer nice.. haha - I went to bed the brakes in and forgot it was on the roof - the 3rd time smashing the brakes they caught good and my phone went flying at about 60 miles an hour, it did not land gracefully. however it still works and the screen is not scratched - hehe. The old brakes were worn really weird, the rotors were fubar'd but the pads looked good... i replaced everything anyway, i can lock up the tires now, before stopping fast was scary.
Jeff - those e-brake cables worked perfectly! Remember that if anyone ever needs them. Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: BiGdAdDeE on August 15, 2010, 09:32:08 PM solid O0

Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: ayoung on August 19, 2010, 12:14:54 PM jeep looks awesome Mitch.
That fuel smell might be a slight leak in the tank. I had that problem for like a year. I could smell fuel, especially when real humid down here, but never saw any leaks at the fuel pump or on the ground. Eventually it started dripping on the ground, pulled everything out and there was a pinhole leak from rust where the plastic guard had been trapping mud for years. A new tank isnt that expensive. Also check the gas cap and make sure that is not bad as well. Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Mitch on August 19, 2010, 01:10:47 PM tank is pretty rusty, kinda flaking away in places. Crown has tanks pretty cheap. Thanks for the advice and nice comment Adam!
Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Mitch on August 25, 2010, 11:15:15 PM Got the passenger side ball joints in, the wheel bearing fell apart while trying to remove it. So Maki and I headed to the zone to pick up a new one. I didn't do the drivers side yet - planning on next month. The passenger side was baaaaaad, so that was priority. The drivers side is very tight still, but I figure I will just do both sides.
Maki, thank you sooooo much for breakfast, your tools, your garage to shelter from the rain. Most of all thanks for guiding me through the entire process and for driving me around. I know you'll never get that 6 hours back, I owe ya one! I also picked up 4 pioneer 6.5" speakers off ebay tonight. Gonna install them in the 5.25" stock locations. I only have 2 speakers in the rear currently and they are crackling bad. I can't hear my audio books on the turnpike!! Must have tunes!!!!! Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Mitch on September 02, 2010, 06:58:03 AM Going to change the AW4 fluid this weekend I think, got some questions since there are sooooo many Jeep pro's on the internet my search has confused me.
1. I am planning on changing it about 3 times, and cycling through all the gears for 5-10 seconds between changes. 2. ATF-4 or Merc/Dex ? - I find too many inconsistencies on the internet. Which do I use. 3. I am not planning on dropping the pan and changing the filter (screen). Is this a bad idea? I have heard its a waste of time and I currently dont have any leaks... :) Edit: my fluid is black - I think I dont want black. Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Twisty on September 02, 2010, 07:13:27 AM Dex/Merc!!!!!
Here's what I would do: drain pan, drive it for a few hundred miles, and then change again. Repeat a few more times until its done. Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Mitch on September 02, 2010, 07:14:48 AM And then theres this: (doesnt mention anything about merc/dex.)

ATF+4(R) is recommended for AW-4 (Asian Warner) transmissions** NOTE :This Service Bulletin DOES NOT apply to Sprinter transmissions, Crossfire transmissions, MK/PM vehicles equipped with Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and WG vehicles equipped with a diesel engine (sales code ENF) and a W5J400 or NAG1 transmission (sales code DGJ). DISCUSSION: ATF+4(R) - (Type 9602) is being used as factory fill for Chrysler Group automatic transmissions. ATF+4(R) is recommended for all vehicles equipped with Chrysler Group automatic transmissions EXCEPT FOR THOSE LISTED IN THE NOTE ABOVE. NOTE :ATF+4(R) must always be used in vehicles that were originally filled with ATF+4(R). DO NOT USE ANY OTHER FLUID. NOTE :ATF+4(R) is backward compatible with ATF+3, ATF+2, and ATF+. Additionally, ATF+4(R) can be used to top off vehicles that used ATF+3, ATF+2, or ATF+. NOTE :If ATF+4® is used to service models originally filled with ATF+3, ATF+2, and ATF+ the fluid maintenance schedules listed for that model does not change. The service interval currently in effect for a given model should continue to be followed. Refer to the Service or Owners manual for maintenance schedule directions. In general terms, If ATF+, ATF+2 or ATF+3 was the recommended fluid, it is now recommended to use ATF+4® BENEFITS ^ Better anti-wear properties ^ Improved rust/corrosion prevention ^ Controls oxidation ^ Eliminates deposits ^ Controls friction ^ Retains anti-foaming properties ^ Superior properties for low temperature operation FLUID COLOR Mopar ATF+4(R) has exceptional durability. However, the red dye used in ATF+4(R) is not permanent; as the fluid ages it may become darker or appear brown in color. ATF+4(R) also has a unique odor that may change with age. With ATF+4(R) fluid, color and odor are no longer indicators of fluid condition and do not necessarily support a fluid change. Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Mitch on September 02, 2010, 07:15:43 AM Dex/Merc!!!!! Here's what I would do: drain pan, drive it for a few hundred miles, and then change again. Repeat a few more times until its done. Thanks Tim, does it matter if I get II vs III vs V ? etc? Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Krome on September 02, 2010, 07:51:11 AM wouldn't be a bad idea to change the filter. atf +4 is apparently a better fluid, but originally the trans was designed for dex II or III I believe.
Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Mitch on September 02, 2010, 07:51:22 AM I guess I will do the NP231 TC while I am at it... same fluid or ATF-4 - seeing mixed results on this too.
Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: jason m on September 02, 2010, 08:25:32 AM Mitch check the dip stick tube and see what it says on there. My 99 XJ DD I only run ATF+4, most Mopar tranney need the ATF+4.
My dip stick say on it ATF+4. Jason. Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Krome on September 02, 2010, 03:19:53 PM no need for friction additive for rear end with a mini-spool/ I never used it and there is no purpose, it's for clutches. Same with the front, just regular oil.
Just buy a bunch of atf+4 and put it in your transfercase and trans. Both can take cheaper atf however, but since jeep issued that TSB I would use the +4 Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Twisty on September 02, 2010, 03:22:21 PM Just put dex/merc in everything. Go on NAXJA or JeepForum and see what people are putting in their AW4s. 90% are dex/merc. The AW4 is a Japanese transmission...so keep it happy with dex/merc.
No additive for the diffs. Additive is for limited slips. Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Mitch on September 02, 2010, 03:55:46 PM just got a case of this:
http://www.valvoline.com/products/consumer-products/automatic-transmission-products/automatic-transmission-fluid/33 off amazon for 29 dollars shipped to my door. It was an "open box" deal. Reg price was 56. Autozone was 40 at the cheap. I dont know how it works, appears to not be dexron III or whatever, but the spec sheet looks like it will work. Did I F up? Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Bluerocket on September 02, 2010, 04:31:29 PM I'm no expert, but I think the AW4 I used to use Dextron 3.
The site says: Helps provide smooth shift performance where DEXRON®-III or a MERCON® fluid is specified So I think Its good? Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: XJFever on September 02, 2010, 06:15:50 PM I'm so confused now, was trying to watch this so I know what to put in my aw4 and diffs.
Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: jeeptech on September 02, 2010, 10:10:37 PM ATF+4 is a very good fluid and will work in all chrysler trans applications including the AW4. I have fixed trans shifting issues with just an ATF+4 fluid change. ATF+4 has the same friction modifier in it that is used in Limited slips this will help the clutches hold better and last longer. Go with ATF+4.
Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Mitch on September 02, 2010, 10:25:45 PM So, should I return my purchase Chris?
Title: Re: 1996 Jeep XJ (insert cool build name here) Post by: Mitch on September 03, 2010, 06:58:35 AM Installed these last night. Now I can hear over the hum on the highway! Only two of the 4 original speakers were working and they were both blown.
These have terrific highs, and at an upgraded size of 6.5" I was hoping for a little more bass.... lol NO BASS! Will be looking for a little sub/amp setup in the future. (http://i52.tinypic.com/2ur5x0l.jpg)
