.....and then realize that perhaps it wasn't the best idea?

is that the new jeep comanche short bed version? looks good, is that going to change your wheelbase as well? think it will be ready by next weekend?
-
Ya, just rolled off the line.
I'm going to bring the wheel base down to 109.5". I just have to move all the mounts 1' closer to the cab. Shouldn't be too hard.
Another reason for doing this is my rear bumper was not safe enough for a heavy pull. I have backed into many trees and the metal was beginning to bend and tear. I'll get a pic to show what I mean.
It should be ready for the FC. I don't think this will be a hard undertaking.
-
are you reusing stock brackets or using new ones? definetly sets it even further apart from everyother mj out there.
-
man when you get a thought you do it. looks good, good looks great. you will love the shorter wheel base, heck you didn't get the chance to hate the longer wheelbase :D
jason.

I'll be making some new ones out of 3/16".

Yes I did. It was killing me at Swanzey. :o
-
you just moving the spring pearchs or are you 4-linking it. my guess is just the pearchs like you talking about but if i know you, you all ready got the joints and the link stuff, LOL just kidding.
jason.
-
Just moving the spring perches 1' forwards. I'm going to weld the bumper to the rear frame, and probably mount the shackles to the bumper to make it as short as possible.
I need to get grinding wheels tomorrow so I can make decent progress.
I have to have this thing done of Thursday in order to get to the Fall Crawl on time!!!!
-
And on another note, the rear frame on the MJ is boxed 1/8" steel. Much better than the 16 gauge that I thought it was.
-
wow Tim! can't wait to see it friday. ;D
-
:D I love it. gotta add this all to your 1ton mj thread though. ;)
-
I like the look Tim, certainly will be more functional for our trails in NE.
It's 8 1/2" longer then a CJ6.
-
dang and you didn't wait for it to start snowing! looks spiffy but get it done for FC
-
I also like the cut. All your work motivates me to get something done on my jeep! :P

Here's today's progress.
Got the frame trimmed more, and the fenders trimmed into a comp cut. I don't know what will come of the fenders...we will see with tire placement.
Then I trimmed the center part.
Trimmed the ends off the bumper.
Put the cut up bumper on the back.
And began to weld it on.
Then the iMan came over to help.
My brother welding the bumper...and iMan grinding off the spring hanger.
Where we ended.

tim, thanks for letting me come over and tinker on your rig
-
nice tim, hey you should think about welding the bed to the cab as I did with mine, I swear its 100% stronger than it ever was with that connected.
-
That looks BEEFY guys, nice. ;)
-
Sweeet.
-
Looks like they got alot of work done today. Nice photography though. :finger:
-
Looking good!! Not much longer till all the body panels are replaced with tube ;)
-
you definatly should tie that rollbar into the subframe to strengthen that bed a little or it'll be the first thing to fall off when you roll. Not a whole lot holding it on anymore.
Tuff to just take it off when you don't have a pile of tube there at your disposal to tube up the rear of the MJ though so it is better than nothing to keep things stiffened up back there, but I am with Tony on this one, attatching it to the cab and to the frame would definately secure things better. my .02

And my pinion angle is now abysmal. I have to call Lou tomorrow to see if I can get some pinion shims.
-
that looks killer twisty
you shoudl def run some box or tube or something from the rollbar to the frame in case of a rollover. it would take no time at all really and make your jeep much more safe. just my .02

I will look into that idea. I need to see what I have for material.

haha, i can't believe you did it all in a day. nice work

Yeah, we made good progress today. ;D
I forgot to mention that Casey came over and helped for a few hours. He cut brackets, and I welded. Worked very well.
Thanks to both Ian and Casey for their help!!!!!
-
Looks great.. But I am trying to figure out why the hell there is still a bed on this thing, take it off and be done with it. Or atleast cut the sides off and leave the floor and build some tube around it.
-
1. I have no money for tube.
2. I have no tube bender.
Next year, I promise!!!
-
looks pissa twisty good work
-
Thanks Davey!
-
i look the look of the bed..even if you tube it you could make some skins for the sides. just my opinion.

my opinion as well
I look the look too!! :woot:
jk jerry ;)
-
wow that's alot narrower than i pictured. i like it, shoul dbe able to sneak around thing and i bet you dumped 150-200lbs in that shot alone.
tim pick up some cheap SCH40 PIPE and run it from your roll bar down to the back of the bumper or to the frame. it will beef the crap out of the frame and really help when you roll. its PIPE yes, but its better than nothing. its going to be plenty strong to survive the next year of abuse till you can dube it.
jason.

Tim that looks awesome! and you did it soo fast! How did it wheel? Did you trim any more around the fender? Looks like the tire was pretty close.
Nice work, love reading your threads!
-
you should dovetail the rear when you 4 link it and tube it, would look awesome. when you get an idea you just act on it, you mentioned the idea and less than a week later its done.
-

Thanks Mitch. I will be trimming that metal today, when I get home from school. I'll get more pics up for ya.
I love the idea of tubing the rear and skinning the sides with the bed sheet metal. I'll have to look for an MJ in a junkyard that I can harvest the sides from. I think mine are too bent.

I think the dented sides give it character, you can make em work. theres a guy in my town with a blue mj, all stock in nice shape, gonna keep an eye on it to see if it goes up for sale, or stop him someday, seeing yours makes everyone want an mj
-
Nice! I vote keep the tub and just plate the sides. I have a buddy who did that to his. Next time I'm over there I'll take a picture or 2 for you.
-
Looking forward to seeing that thing on the trail again.
Hey Tim you bringing some spare 30 spline hubs this weekend?
-
No, but I can if you want. They're the Warn units. I won't need any with my Spicer hubs. You on the other hand....:finger:
;D
-
Well I'm down to the crunch now. I went to Lou's shop to pick up some 6* shims for my rear axle, and upon assembly I discover that my centering pins need to be replaced.
I've been working on the thing since I got home at 4:30. I have 2 clip-on lights outside so I can see, BUT I'm almost done with cutting and welding.
I hope I make it. :o
-
This banner is soooooo you Tim. ;)

.............and thats just what you've done and continue to do.
-
Just got in. Ran out of wire. I've burned through 3 lbs of wire for this little project :o
I was on a roll too. ::) I'd still be out there if I had more ;D
-
I hope I make it. :o
Its not "I hope" its "I will"!
Positive thinking!
-
You on the other hand....:finger: ;D
Dam now you got me thinking!
-
1.) New shackle boxes...done.
2.) Bumper/hitch tie-ins to frame....done.
3.) Passenger rear fender trimmed.
4.) 6* pinion angle shim and new spring centering pins installed. U-bolts finger tight around axle.
5.) Shock mounts welded on, and shocks connected.
Tomorrow I have to:
1.) Mount my hydro reservoir, and possibly bleed the system.
2.) Hook up the brake lines, and maybe bleed them.
3.) Make rear drive shaft.
4.) Trim driver's fender.
5.) Trim front bumper and fenders.
6.) Mount spare tire.
Will it be ready??? HHHHMMMMMM :woot:

dont want to forget that step, you wont be a happy camper if you wheel with loose u bolts

Get R Done !!! ;D

So upon reassembly and construction of my driveshaft I ran into a rather serious problem. The 1310 u-joint was at its maximum angle at ride height. After much thinking and stewing, I decided to remove a leaf from the leaf spring packs, and grind the slip yoke. Removing a leaf spring worked beautifully, and the MJ now sits rather level. The grinding of the yoke also proved fruitful and with the combination of the two I will have at least some down travel. The driveshaft is cooling now, but in a few minutes I will go out and install it, and measure for shock travel. My plan is to use the shocks to limit down travel so I won't over extend the u-joint. God I need limiting straps.

go to tractor supply and get axle straps. the type you use to secure a vehicle to a trailer if using ractchet straps instead of chain. i use them all the time for limiting straps, very strong, easy to mount, cheap
get it done twisty
-
I like that idea. ;D
Today I got the steering reassembled, and bled. The driveshaft is in, and the shock mounts are re-re-re-welded. Axle u-bolts are tight.

skipping the first minute or so and the message fits you Twisty

I'd say that this "modification" has more benefit and practicality than the 1 ton swap. Much easier to fit between trees, and much less tree contact. Wheel base is a great number, and the truck looks more uniqe.
I am a happy camper. ;D
-
good job Twisty.

i figured you were going to like it ;) are you keeping these numbers are going shorter if you 4-link it.
jason.
-
No trying to egg you on but... FOUR LINK THE REAR
-
In due time.
:woot:
Jason- I'm not sure that I will do with the wheel base when I link it. I really like what I did with the bumper on the rear, and I'd hate to cut it off. Maybe once I go bigger in tire size, I will stretch the wheel base out again to give myself a 90* departure angle.
