Title: CO trip
Post by: Posimoto on September 09, 2014, 07:12:04 AM
I was asked to post pics of my recent trip to Colorado. It was my first time in CO and it was the most amazing place I've been, mountains, wheeling, early Jeeps, and friendly folks. I stayed a week in Ouray the so called Jeepin capital of the world.

I'll add pics during the week of each day's trail run. I found the trails were not difficult, but here's the thing, if you get careless, or have faulty brakes or steering you die! There are no pine trees to slow or catch your fall if you go off the edge, there you fall 3000 ft and die.

Financially it was too expensive towing or shipping my Jeep out there so I rode passenger.

The following pics will give you an "idea" of how beautiful it is there but doesn't tell the whole story, kinda like a Jeep climbing a steep grade and the pic make it look trivial.  All my pics were taken with a phone.

Sunday

Sunday was a traveling day for me I arrived in Albuquerque NM at 1pm and drove 5.5 hours to Ouary on Rt 550.

A little history here: Over 100 years ago a mining family built their home near here. They had 2 daughters their name's Minnie and Maggie. The 2 gulches (valleys) were then named after these 2 daughters. If you look close you can see a vehicle.

very awesome Chuck!
I've always wanted to visit my birth state, maybe once my wife gets burned out from the damned cruises we will take a family trip there, every time I see pictures I am stunned by the beauty, and have actually contemplated moving back there.... maybe someday...

and a ford explorer in our group. Out on the trails there were a lot of Jeeps, a ton of side by sides and a few dirt bikes. The 4x4 crowds create income for Ouray and Silverton so if your rig isn't registered not a problem, your welcomed to drive down main st, park at the local bar and have a few.

This pic was taken around 2pm. By 5 the road is packed with Jeep, side by sides, and bikes.

I have a dozen or so early CJ pics I'll post later in this thread. All the locals own older rigs.

Trails: Corkscrew Pass, Hurricane Pass, California Gulch

From the top of Storm Peak we could look across to Hurricane Pass (below).

Trail that goes along the Animas river.

Niagara Peak (below) in the background

We stopped at Animas Forks Ghost Town. They were remodeling to save the property, re-roofed and installed glass in the windows. Kinda takes away the feel of a ghost town but will preserve them for the long haul. No need to preserve the wood no termites in the area.

The day after we left the couple below roll three times on Black Bear Pass and lived to tell about it. The rocks saved them from going over the edge.

Trails: Tom Boy Mine and Yankee Boy Basin

Although many of these pictures don't show it, there is a very big drop off to the side.

(http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d77/ChuckR/Ouray%20Co%208%202014/1_zps8765d426.jpg) (http://s33.photobucket.com/user/ChuckR/media/Ouray%20Co%208%202014/1_zps8765d426.jpg.html)

At one point there was no room for a road on this cliff side but they built a road where there wasn't room.

Camp Bird is an active mine but some of the buildings were abandoned long ago. This next pic is an old mill that they crushed the rock to help get out the precious metals.

Then we continued on to Yankee Boy Basin.

This next pic is of the trail to Governor Basin. We were planning on going there next but we could see there were bulldozers and other heavy equipment on the trail so we decided not to go there.

There were magnificent, steep rock mountains all around Yankee Boy Basin.

After Yankee Boy Basin we headed to Camp Bird Mine. This mine is still active but many of the buildings are abandoned.

These old homes are over 100 years old. Vandals have broken the windows but this year they are remodeling them. It looks like someone may even move in.

How did you plan/get to do this trip?   Looks like a real blast to be honest and might be something it would be cool to do myself one day.

I've been a member of another forum for about 5 years. Dave (blue CJ5) has offered to lead a trail ride for the last three years without many takers so he said this would be the last time for him, so I had an opportunity and went.

A round trip flight to Albuquerque was 340, rented a car @ 11 a day for the 5.5 drive to Ouray (rentals are dirt cheap in NM). I found this to be the least expensive way out there.
Although Dave said he wouldn't be doing the trip again next year I'm planning on going. I'm thinking next year I'll fly into Denver and driver 6 hours to Ouray as it will be a more scenic route then NM. There is so many more trail to wheel then you can fit into one week.

I would have let others know about the trip before hand but it was sandwiched between our club BBQ and fall crawl.

Hey Chuck,

Great trip and pictures!! It that one picture an old jack hammer or hand drill?

A few years ago I went to Silverton CO (30 min south of Ouray). I can't wait to get out there again.

Two other trails I'd like to do is the Kokopelli Trail (CO to Utah) or the White Rim Trail (Utah).

Hi Dan!
Thanks, it's a hydraulic jack hammer. Silverton is a very cool place I'll be posting some pics of Silverton soon. We were in there four times during the week.

Badass chuck.  Looks like it was a whole lot of fun.   That's a very cool style of wheeling if love to try it once my jeep isn't running rich.  Seems it's time for me to take the trip west.

It was, and I can't wait to go back next year. We should plan a NEJZ excursion late July/early August 2015.  :burnout:

I know your running FI, but running a carb in high altitude was an issue there. I had to re-adjust the carb on the red 77 CJ7 Tuesday morning before we hit the trail.

I'd love to go out west and hit up some trails.  Trying to convince the wife to be that it's a good honeymoon  :woot:

Trails: Ophir Pass to Telluride - Imogene Pass back to Ouray

It was a cloudy day. The mountain tops were often in the clouds.

Heading up Ophir Pass from the east.

We crossed the pass and it was still too cloudy to see very far ahead. There was a long stretch that you couldn't pass, normally you wouldn't want to go out there until you were sure no one was coming. Fortunately it cleared up and we were able to see that no one was coming.

We went to Silverton and then followed the trail north to Eureka. Eureka was an old mining town. There isn't much of the town anymore but you can still see the remnants of the mine and mill.

From here we climbed Eureka trail.

Then we headed back down.
After this trail ride we all headed back home. It was a great trip. I really enjoyed the week.

After we parted ways I decided to hang around Sliverton before taking the long ride to Albuquerque.

I met an interesting gentleman, and my new friend in Sliverton, Mr Carey Green. He's been living in Silveton for 22 years. He purchased his ford woody from the Henry Ford Museum in 1997 (auction). We talked for about 40 mins before I had to head out. He told me if I come back next year he would give me a ride ( he was charging the battery when I arrived).

Saturday Aug 30

I had a couple hours to kill before my flight so I hung out with the engineering students from UNM. They build their own cars and race them in the schools parking lot every Saturday, it was a great way to finish off the trip.

A kid I used to work with, went to the university of mich, he was an engineer and got onto a team like that.   He learned a lot and had a blast.  They built some cool [censored].  I'll see if I can find any pics of the cars they built.

That sounds and looks like an amazing trip.

Looks awesome Posi!  Great pictures. Makes me want to go back! If you guys have a free day, check out rafting the Animas river. Goes from Silverton to Durango and you have to take a train to get to the rafting starting point. Class IV to V

I was looking into rafting but didn't have the time, next year I may go for 2 weeks so I can.

This year I had the opportunity to do Black Bear Pass, and Poughkeepsie Gulch 2 trails I was looking forward doing. I flew out with my cousin and we rented a tj barbie jeep (more on this later).

We wheeled 8-10 hours a day covering anywhere from 30 miles to 90 miles a day. Trails are listed below in order.

Monday, July 27th - Engineer Pass, Animas Forks Ghost Town, California Gulch and California Pass (didn't stop at the pass), Hurricane Pass ,Corkscrew Pass and got onto Highway 550.

Tuesday, July 28th - Blackbear Pass, Bridal Veil Falls was the 2nd highest waterfall in Colorado. Came back over Imogene Pass

Wednesday July 29th - Drove to Silverton, Stony Pass, Crossed Pole Creek and then the Rio Grand River. Beartown site (but no sign of a town). Continued on to Kite Lake.

Thursday July 30 - Lower Engineer Pass trail. Poughkeepsie Gulch. Stopped at Lake Como for lunch. Hurricane Pass. Saw a '67 Lincoln in Minnehaha Basin. Went to Velocity Basin under Storm Peak. Went to Prospect Gulch where we saw a steam engine in an old mining building.

We landed in Durago On Saturday the 25th and drove the “million dollar highyway” to Ouray about 70 miles (Rt550).

Some history and pics along the way to Ouray.

When we were returning from poughkeepsie gulch heading to Silverton we went by the gold King mine. At that time workers were cleaning out the mine waste.  A week after we went by there the toxins spilled into the Animas river.

Great pictures Chuck! Thanks for sharing. Hope you were representing and wearing NEJZ tshirts!

What a terrible mistake the EPA made. Glad you were able to enjoy it before the accident. I love wheeling out in there.

Check out the Kokopelli Trail (CO to Moab - 142 miles)
Or the White Rim Road in Canyonlands, Utah.

These are both on my list to do. I did part of the White Rim Road as part of a day trip and it was awesome.

Travel days

Some of us arrived in Ouray on Saturday July 25th. This year we had 8 vehicles participate on the trail rides. Not everyone went on every trail ride. Usually we had 5 vehicles on a ride.

Ouray is a beautiful town in a box canyon.

Monday, July 27th
Engineer Pass, Animas Forks Ghost Town, Hurricane Pass ,Corkscrew Pass, etc

Three miles south of Ouray we turned off highway 550 and onto Lower Engineer Pass trail. The path was very rocky right from the start.

I rented a 14 year old toy tj with bald street tire and a receiver hitch to rake in all the rocks and gravel. I totally thrashed it!

At the end of California Gulch we headed over California Pass

California Pass overlooks Lake Como at the south end of Poughkeepsie Gulch. We'll be going up Poughkeepsie Gulch later in the week.

After California Pass we didn't really descend much before going over Hurricane Pass.

Next we went over Corkscrew Pass.

Tuesday, July 28th
Blackbear Pass and Imogene Pass

We had a group of four jeeps as we headed over Blackbear pass.
Many people were hesitant about this trail.

We turned off highway 550 and started climbing BlackBear trail.

Stony Pass, Beartown site, Kite Lake

Today we took the highway 20 miles to Silverton. From there we headed north. We locked into 4WD and headed over Stony Pass.

Things are different at this altitude, besides thin air your that much closer to the sun and will burn easy. I found myself a fishing hat that worked perfect.

A couple of weeks ago Pole Creek was impassible due to snow melt but the crossing wasn't bad today. My cousin wheeled today

Next we crossed the Rio Grande River. (the source of the Rio Grande River is Stony Pass)

We continued to Beartown site but there is no longer any sign of a town. We continued on to Kite Lake where we stopped for lunch.

Poughkeepsie Gulch. The wall

Besides Black Bear Pass, I was really looking forward doing Poughkeepsie Gulch. I was told by the trail leader (local guy) that I could not do the wall open/open that I would need front and rear lockers. Rental Jeeps are not allowed on BBP or Poughkeepsie Gulch. The guy that hooked me up the rental for me knows the owner so they gave me a beater to do both trails. I treated it as such and thrashed the underbelly and passenger side rocker.  :woot:
