Automatic transmission coolers?
« on: March 06, 2011, 06:36:11 AM »
Does anyone have any experience with these? I know I want to put one in, but should I go with the fan cooled or will fan less be all I need for my jeep? If the fan cooled is the way to go will i need to install an additional temp sensor for it? While i'm asking about coolers, how about power steering fluid?

Pretty sure this is the one I have on the buggy.  Its only $139, it turns on with my radiator electric fan switch & stays on till I shut the motor off.  This will be plenty for regular driving duty.  I have mine set up with the hot coming thru the top port and the cool fluid exiting at the bottom.  However I've been recently told a more effective way would be to hook the hot at the bottom and the cool at the top, slowing the flow rate down and allowing the fluid to stay in the cooler a little longer hence cooling it down a bit more, not sure on the validity of this statement.

That's cheaper than the ones I have seen. Thanks, do you run anything on the power steering?

Yup but being full hydraulic its a bit different then your application.
Any decent plate style cooler on the low pressure side in front of your radiator will do.  Stay away from the tube & fin, they're not very effective.
edit: you can wait till the next swap meet, theres a big one in the spring, and grab a one for $5, thats what I did for my steering coolers.  BTW the racer guys all they used are in line fined style coolers, but since theyre going fast it works for them.

So to summerize, fan forced on the tranny and plate for power steering. Cool.
Thank you!

X2 on plate style.  A large cooler placed in front of the radiator about 1" away from the radiator core, with a direct shot through the grill is all you need for the trans cooler.  You don't need a fan it's not necessary as long as you have good air flow across the cooler.  Don't use the stupid zip ties they give you in the kit.  Not the right way to mount the cooler, make some brackets.  I'm putting together some trans cooler kits to directly bolt on to TJ's and JK's.  They are in the works as of now.

I can be fairly lazy at times so if you have something made up or need a test mule I'm game. So you think plate type coolers for both steering and tranny no fan at all?

from what I have seen, so long as the after market transmission cooler can get air flow ( the plate ones), they don't really need a dedicated fan, and do the job just fine.
unless you are in the middle of a desert.
And when it comes to power steering coolers, I know even less.
yayyyy it has 4x4
