Not that I am going to use them, but I'm curious to why someone would.
I saw some on an XJ for sale the other day with lift blocks between the axle and leafs. It gave the guy about 4" of lift. Looks like it would put alot of strain on the u-bolts. Lift blocks bad idea? Why wouldn't he just do a shackles instead?

I have huge lift blocks on my Dodge, but from what I can tell they are factory.

That's what I figured about them. I hadn't seen them on a XJ before and just looked like a bad idea. Jeep looked like a Mall Crawler anyways.

Lots of 3/4 and 1 ton trucks came with them from the factory.
Manufacturers basically put a flatter thicker spring packs in the rear to make for a better ride quality, yet still have the load capability. Quite often the rear of the truck would sit lower than the front since the front had a continous load (engine weight), so small lift blocks were incorporated into the set up, when used properly in a vehicle, nothing wrong with them.

I would never use them in an offroad vehicle though

also, i believe, if you put too much of a shackle lift your changing the pinion angle.
