CJ2A plastic tank
« on: September 30, 2013, 12:44:02 PM »
Hey Posi you have any experience with the replacement plastic tank for the 2A?
Looks like they run about the same price as a steel one.  Looks like the pick up is on the top and it doesnt look like they have a fuel return fitting.  Just looking to see if youve seen one of these before and if it was worth it over the steel.
Yea my steel one is leaking.

The original steel tank doesn't have a return line. It does have the fuel feed at the bottom however, that wasn't a good idea being all the crap/sediment gathered at the bottom as well. The fuel feed at the top is a better system on the plastic tank and it doesn't rust, but the goodness stops there because I haven't found a plastic tank that doesn't leak out the filler neck on angles with ¾/F tank no matter what cap you use.

Personally, if their about the same price I would recommend steel, or you can repair your tank fairly easy if it's not too thin overall. There are a few good tank sealing products that work very good. Hope this helps

Dont know why but looks like I have feed & return and they're leaking on top of the muffler good stuff!
BTW the current tank leaks out of the filler neck like a bastard.
will take the tank out and see where the leak is coming from, not crazy about the fittings being on top of the exhaust.

The original 2a has only 2 fuel lines, 1 feed to fuel pump and another from the fuel pump to carb. The bottom of the tank should have one feed to the carb and one drain plug. If there is 2 lines from the bottom of the tank it's possible someone ran a fuel drain line from the drain plug, but that would be a guess without seeing it first hand. The new steel and plastic tanks (2a) do not except a return line as well.

I found in some cases where a new cap and gasket stopped the leak from the filler neck in a steel tank, you can also tweak the metal just inside the neck to help secrue the cap however, nothing I've found stops a plastic tank filler neck from leaking.
