I dont know Tim, after wheeling with an auto would you go back to a stick?

Hell no!!

I have WAY more control with an auto.  And the column shift is the bee's knees.

The only time I like the use of a manual transmission is when coming down a long hill while towing a load.  I HATE riding brakes, and the manual will allow you to engine brake.

compression braking is great.. also, when you need to rock the vehicle, little gas, little clutch, get the jeep rocking and then floor it, gotten me out of a sticky situation or two.

One thing I like about the auto is how you can load the drivetrain and get better control as opposed to feathering out the clutch and trying to creeping foward.

Plus, my understanding is, with an auto you don't need your gears as deep

I'd rather have a stick in a ZJ than the stock slushbox auto. I'd rather put in an aw4 myself, I think I've had enough with the standards

After about 200 miles the setup is still going strong. I am now in RWD mode with a new drive shaft from Tattons (Which I love, by the way)

The Jeep is an ABSOLUTE BLAST to drive around now. I feel like I am driving a Mac Truck with all the driveline slop, so perfect shifting is necessary to keep everything smooth.

The chrysler 42re is a chrysler transmission. They only last if you change the fluid every 30k and even then they re not too strong.

I wanted a 5-Speed on the trailer because this is also my daily driver. Most wheeling I do is waiting in line on a trail, and it gets a little boring. This could keep me a little more entertained and a little away from turning my Jeep into an all out trailer queen.

Once it gets nicer out I will take pictures of my 4wd shift linkage and the clutch pedal.

Oh yeah, and I am throwing 7 codes. The hardest part of the swap will faking the transmission output shaft speed sensor, which emits a signal and lets the transmission know that the torque converter is working. I am planning on building a board that outputs a signal to fake the computer into thinking the transmission is in neutral.

could you get a ECM from a 4.0 manual jeep? I know zj's came with ax15's behind the 4.0's stock.

Zj's came with only the manual as a standard option in 93-94. After that they were not available from the dealer. So, all ZJ 5-Speeds are OBD-1.

The XJ has different ecu and transmission computers so that won't work.

I have been studding a 98 factory service manual I have on PDF. I will be able to spoof all of the pressure transducers, but this output speed sensor that generates a signal is turning out to be a total pain in the ass.

Luckily I have until August before my sticker runs out.

I was wondering how you were going to combat that issue, I also thought of doing an ax15 swap into my zj when the transmission took a Censored, but obd2 and sticker is where i decided to rebuild my auto

Have you thought about looking at Dodge ECM's.
OR how about a TJ w/auto?
Also, I wonder if you can have your current ECM re-flashed for the modification?

I should probably go talk to a dealer that is "jeep friendly" to ask them if ECU flashing is a possibility. Anyone know of a dealer that wont just tell me to leave?

The current codes, these codes are thrown right after startup. I have removed my trans fuse to see if that would change anything.

P0713
P0753
P1763
P1765

I did some research with the codes that I am throwing. A lot of forums say to use a dealer simulator tool to identify if the problem is in the wiring harness.

I believe the simulator tool is a Miller 8333. I will have to visit a dealer to double check to see if that is the one you would use with a 42RE transmission.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Miller-8333-TRANSMISSION-SIMULATOR-for-your-DRB-III_W0QQitemZ270518982808QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Automotive_Tools?hash=item3efc301898

For $60 or so, I think this is a good deal. The development board I was going to buy costs about $40, and that would require substantial work to get things to work. I could mount this under the rear seat and run it permanently.

Are there any Jeep Tech's that read the forum that have used this special dealer tool?

I gaurantee you that jeeptech would be able to answer your questions.

And I do not think that Chrysler ECMs can be re-flashed.  If all else fails, what about going to a TJ 6cyl/manual wiring harness?

Censored is for sale now.

And BTW, I believe a Jeep wrangler ECU will fix the problem easier than emulating the the transmission output speed sensor.
