Are you saying that there is a chance the rockers are not getting oil?  I did new lifters with the cam and they were soaked in oil for a few days.
You never know, some people don't like using Vaseline because they say it can clog the oil passages.
Might be worth a try to crank the motor with no spark & the valve covers off to see if there oil coming out of the pushrods.

he is saying they may not have been "pumped up". adjust them with it running.
Not a good idea, tried that once, didnt go too well  ;D

Quick Update:

I hooked up a mechanical oil gauge and pulled the distributor.  I got 60 psi of oil pressure almost instantly with an electric drill on the oil pump so that was good.  Next I pulled a valve cover and ran the pump again.  Oil cam oozing out of all the rockers so that was a good sign as well.

I dropped in the dist and fire her up again.  The ticking is not as loud but definitely there.  It could be that one or two of the rockers is a little too loose but I followed the same procedure for each.  Both valves closed, remove any lash, tighter 3/4 of a turn.

I am also wondering if it might be coming from the water pump so I might pull the belts and check.

More updates to come....... :-\

Thats great news Kent, it wouldnt hurt to go back and recheck all the rockers, I remember having to go back and some had to be tightened up a bit.

Thanks Miguel.  That is next on the list.

I took off the belts and ran it for a min just to confirm it wasn't anything coming from the York/waterpump/PS/alt and the click, click, click was still there.

I couldn't resist taking it down the street (plus she was almost out of gas) and I must say I was nice to be back behind the wheel.... even if it was only a 1/4 mile.... :-\

I am going to go through the rockers again to see if that solves the clicking and if so then I just need to hunker down and do the rear main seal.... :furious:

More updates to come...

FYI yesterdays Horsepower episode the guys built an almost 500 hp AMC 360.  Not cheap but it can be done, flat top pistons running I think it was 10.5-1 compression, Edelbrock aluminum heads, Edelbrock intake, 750 carb, comp hydraulic flat tappet cam.

Was nice to see them build something a little different.  Just goes to show that with off the shelf parts you can still build a pretty mean AMC.

She is parked and will not move again until she is moving under the power of the new 360... ::)

Your eyes are not playing tricks on you, that was August 2012........just over 2 YEARS AGO!

After a long ordeal that I am glad is over with, I am happy to report my J10 is back!  I spare you all the details but I am lucky that someone didn't wander into my driveway and offer my some ridiculously low offer for the truck because it got to the point where I just couldn't look at it anymore.

She is now moving under the power of a freshly rebuilt 360.  I've only broken in the cam and taken it for a few quick rides around town.  I'll post up more info as I get everything squared away.

It feels good to have a running Jeep again...  I miss NEJ

Ready to install (2nd time...)

Dropping her in.  Twisty - do you remember what your hoist even looks like?

Yes, there were issues with the lower end but they have been corrected.

I've done some quick tuning and will throw a timing light on it tomorrow when I am back in Boston.  I had a vac gauge on it and was able to twist the dist to get close to 18" .  Chuck looked at the carb a while ago so that should be good to go.

I'll post up a quick video of her running after the weekend and report on how she drives.  I am going to take it easy for the first few hundred miles since the whole lower end is all new.
