Miles of Legal Off-Road Areas On Nantucket Island!
« on: May 29, 2007, 08:39:21 AM »
Hey all, just wanted to let you know that I spent the weekend on Nantucket for FIGAWI (sailboat race, but really just a huge party weekend).  We rented a brand new 2007 Jeep with 17 miles on it and then took it off road all over the island!  It was not new when we were done with it, lets just say it that way!  When you rent a jeep, it comes with an offroad vehicle permitt so you can drive on miles of beaches there.  There are also miles and miles of state owned land with jeep trails and brush, dunes, rocky terrain, you name it, it is there to explore.  This is the most open area I have seen in MA for offroad exploration, it is awesome!  I will post pics when I can.  If you have not been out there, you should.  It is expensive to bring your own jeep on the ferry over there so you are better off renting and getting the sticker on the rental.  They rent all the new style Jeeps both 2 and 4 doors.  We had the 2 door and I love the way it drives, although it was making some bad noises after we took it off road and it probably needs a new paint job now.  We covered it in mud so they would not see the scratches when we turned it in :)  It was on my buddies credit card and he took out the extra insurance knowing we were going four wheelin' with it...   Let me know if any of you have been out there, it is an amazing island in many ways!

I've never been to Nantucket, but that sounds pretty fun!

I've been there, go there for work sometimes.  Last time I was there we ran through the trails in the altar rock area in a rented corolla!!

definitely not the most open land I've ever seen, but there are a bunch of trails on the island.  We actually got the corolla stuck on a steep road over by wauwinet!

I have been lucky enough to go there most summers for a week or so with my family. My jeep is plastered with oversand vehicle permits from when my mom owned my Jeep.

It was great 10 years ago, but now it sucks.

Smith Point is always closed because of stupid birds and landowners getting mad about parties late at night. Great Point is nice but it requires a separate sticker that goes around $150, and regular Nantucket Beach is around $150 as well.

There isn't any real offroading, all the "trails" are soft sand and terrian that a Subaru can do. We brought my moms Toyota Camery to the top of Altar Rock once.

However it is very fun driving out to the beach, taking the surfboards off the top of the car and going in the water. But going over there is not practical anymore, it costs around $400 to bring a car over, and that is about 6 months in advance. You will have to pay at least $2000 a week for a cotage, and thats for one with a single bedroom and rats crawling around.

The island is a great place that everyone should go to but I would not associate it with offroading. The beaches are much better!

Well, I guess we found some trials and hilly areas that were freshly cut and no Subaru could have made it through as we had to dislodge a 6' tree stump from under the jeep on one of the hills.  Yeah many trails were dirt roads, but still lots of fun with lots of mud.  Perhaps we ventured off some of the trails too. We also ventured onto all the beaches as they were not closed this time of year.  It is worth exploring in a rental jeep and you can't beat the bar scene, but yeah it is all quite pricey over there.  We slept on board the boat on the town dock for $25 a night so there are ways to have fun in the ritzy island on a low budget.  The rental jeep is a good way for someone to try beach wheelin' without having to get a seasonal pass.

Yeah I have heared fagawi weekend is CRAZY over there. The wheeling you did was probably illegal. The people out there are crazy with their conservasion. However, if you ventured near the airport there is some nice legal wheeling. I know out there it is preety much in the middle of nowhere. Where else can you shoot an AR-15 about a half a mile from the airport fence. :D

yeah, I dont' think that there is anything that I would consider a challenging trail by any means on nantucket...maybe a few steep spots that wold be fun, but not worth bringing a jeep over there.  I don't think that I'd ever go over to that island other than when work is picking up the tab!!  My first few times I was specifically instructed NOT to rent a jeep!  But I was talking with the client a while ago and she told me that next time I should rent a jeep......

once was a man from nantucket...

hey did you need a winch to pull Ted Kenedy's drunk fat ass out of the water?
Dad always said "If it has boobs or spark plugs it will be fun AND will cause you problems."

Teddy hangs out on the Vineyard, not Nantucket.

Even though his "Nantucket Hair" hairstyle carries over.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but just thought I'd add to it.

Just got back from Nantucket.  I was curious how much it was to rent one of the new JKs from Nantucket Windmill.  Before tax and such, it's 99 bux!!!  However, they do have beach permits and oversands permits, so if you wanted to go drive all over the beaches and such, all you have to do is rent.  However, all of the trails through the center of the island are on public land....so you don't need any permits.
