bigger problems

So i replaced by steering pump today, which went really well, didnt think it would be that easy, worst part was getting the belt back on.  Which leads me to my new problem, the crankshaft pulley seems to be about 1/2" further out then the rest pfbthe pulleys, the fan fins just barely scrape the front edge of the crankshaft pulley.  I can see 2 "layers" of the pulley, thw outer layer being the part with the belt grooves. The inner "layer" of the pulley seems to nest inside the outer and is as close to the block as possible, which leads me to believe that the entire shaft didnt slide out, but maybe just the part of the pulley the belt goes on?

Is there 2 pieces in there?  Is it possible that when my steering pump.siezed it put enoufh tension on the.belt that the crankshaft pulley came loose or moved slightly off of what ever it sits on?

I currently have a pulley puller i borrowed for the steering pump, but something tells me i need a.bigger puller.

Crap, is all that comes to.mind right now.

Ok i posted this in complete panic....im still in panic mode,.but i think google answered my question.  Seems.the pulley may.jave slipped off the harmonic.balancer, because of a worn piece of rubber between the two pieces.  Ok i now know where to start, my.bigger problem is figuring out how to fix it.haha.

usually the pulley is bolted to the inner ring of the balancer and should not reflect any movement if the rubber slipped. The balancer may have come loose or backed off some. that happens in rare cases if not installed with some sealant. if this is the case you would see shiney part where the seal was riding exposed. you can remove the pulley and hammer the balancer back in and tighten up the bolt.

If your able to grab the balancer and push the whole crank back and forth than your thrust bearing is shot. if its a standard you will sometimes see movement when you depress the clutch, but not always.

In a pinch you can always shave a groove or two off the belt and run it so its inside the pulleys and wont jump off on you.

Im going to pick up a new balancer/pulley assembly tonight, ill take the old one off if i can repair it i will.  But youre the first one ive seen say anything about a bolt holding the 2 pieces together.  From all the posts ive read the job seems straight forward and the biggest problem i might have is figuring out how to hold the pulley still while i break loose the nut on the front. Ill check for movement for the thrust bearing, but with it running i see no wobble or play anywhere.

Your crank pulley is 2 pieces and bonded together with rubber.  It's common for them to come apart with age.  You need a new crank pulley.  It's simple to replace.  But does require a different style puller then what you already have for the power steering.

Matt, i pulled up the part on advanced parts, ive got a harmonic balancer on hold, from the pictures it appears to be the exact same part as the pulley assembly, but they have diffetent part #s

your right, i forgot that these jeeps had that style, typically older style balancers were separate from the pulleys and they would bolt up. guess i was thinking even older. i would say thats probably your culprit then. autozone will rent you the puller you need most likely.

Can't say what the difference is.  I'd go with the one you have on hold.

How hard is it to pull the radiator?  Haha. 

Borrowed the chrysler specific harmonic balancer puller, its a 3 hook style puller but i cant get the hooks to grab the edges, they just keep slipping off.  I think i might need to use the puller with bolts instead of hooks, but there isnt enough room.  Ive never pulled a radiator before seems kind of involved.

Make sure the feet of the puller are fully seated.  My puller I have to take completely apart and out one leg in at a time. Otherwise it pops out. 

Pulling a radiator isn't hard just time consuming and also can be difficult if it's a tight area

I decided to just pull the radiator.  Almost got it out last night, only problem i ran into was disonnecting the tranny cooler return line.  I got the hose clamp off but couldnt unseat the hose.  I gave up it was almost midnigjt and i didnt want to do something stupid out of desperation.  Otherwise radiator is ready to come out, just wondering if i should pull the ac condensor, i removed the wwird square hose clamps for the lines, but couldnt figure out how to seperate the joint/lines.

Im actually considering draining the AC, it doesnt get cold.  And i dont care if it does.  But i want to leave it intact incasr.i decide tosetup OB air in the future.  Just not sure if the AC compressor will get damaged if i drain the system?

Desperation 1 Me 0, cut the tranny cooler return line.  Hopefully i left eniugh to reattach.

Thanks for the help guys, shes rolling again.  Few more loose ends and im hoping to take her out for some light wheeling.
