D300 clocking ring/ flip kit
« on: June 30, 2015, 09:53:30 PM »
hey guys,
so i finally got a chance to tear into my YJ and found that not only
my skidplate was bent (as well as my body mounts) so badly that i HAD
to drop the skidplate to get the transfer case out.
The chain in my 231 is stretched and needs replacing.
i have (3) dana 300's here so i am thinking of swapping in one of those...

who makes a good clocking/flip kit?
(AX15 in a 93 YJ with 4.0 motor)
i am leaning towards Novak, but want to hear any other suggestions
i have heard some kits aren't thick enough and may leak...
looking to pull trigger quickly as i wanna get it back together ASAP!
thanks
j-dawg

J dawg!!  I know a lot of the leaks with flipped d300s come from the shift rail seals.

Modify the case for twin sticks before you put it in. ☺

grab another 231 for $100? I've heard putting all that money(flip kit, shifters, HD output, 4to1) into a 300 isn't worth it, use it as a down payment on an Atlas?

Bob has an excellent point, and you can keep the ever so slightly deeper gears of the 231.

Hi Jay!

Trade/sell one of the 300 for the 231

wow, i am surprised by the reactions... i would have thought the 300 is a good upgrade.
i can just rebuild the 231, i just assumed that if i was spending money,
it was silly to replace the chain as most everything on this was weaker...
i will be pulling 2 of the 300's soon anyway for spares. rebuilding the 231 will get me out on the trail faster anyway I suppose...

Keeping the 231 is good advise.  The 300 has the same 26 spline outputs that the 231 does, so there is no real upgrade there.  Plus, you will need to make new drive shafts.

The only real upgrade the 300 offers in my opinion is the ability to twin stick it.  But I'd just rebuild the 231 and save for an atlas.
