gear oil
« on: June 27, 2015, 06:59:20 AM »
im changing out the fluids in my diffs on the buggy this afternoon and was just curious what you all thought would be the best weight gear oil to use.  frond is a d60 w/arb, rear is a d60 with detriot.  I normally run 80-90 or 75-140 depending on what I can easily get my hands on.  just curious what you guys all used??

I've been using coastal 80-90w in the 5 gallon bucket for years. I attach a pump on the bucket to fill the diffs, tranny, and t-case.

Your more likely to break a Detroit than a spool

ok cool...since I work for a dealer I kind of get free access to stuff.  no idea what brand it is, but I usually use whatever I have laying around that is enough to fill the diff.  but because these axles have some money into them I wanted to put the correct stuff in.  I used our bulk 80-90 for front and rear.

rich...I know the spool is stronger that's why I am actually kind of happy, just very annoyed that the dumbass that sold me the rig clearly had no idea what he had.  now im wondering about a few of the other things.

I run supertech 75w-140 if I am not planning on opening up the cover again soon. Otherwise cheap 80w-90.

I read that 75w-140 can be used in all applications that 80w-90 was specified in, in most cases.

IMO, 75-140 isn't needed in the northeast, just doesn't get warm enough. However, I would run it if I lived in Texas or the southern states. Synthetic oil is a waste of money used in diffs, manual tranny's, and t-cases again, IMO, these gears don't see the tight tolerance and heat of an engine where it's better suited.
