You didn't say you heard a squeal or smelled burnt rubber two things that typically happen when a pully locks up. It may have been simply a crack in the belt that eventually broke the belt.
Overheating was caused by water pump propeller not spinning do to the broken belt.
You my friend are a stickler for details, but thank you. I shouldve wrote a little more info.
Sunday while replacing the tierod and doing some other routine maintence, i noticed the belt had alot of slack so i tightened it a bit. It is an old belt with very slight cracking. Since then ive heard a very minor squeal here and there. Yesterday i had it idling at the store and it shutdown. I panicked and restarted it, i had to rev it to keep it from dying. Turned it off and loosened the belt a little, restarted it, it ran on its own, but i heard alot of squealing and a little smoke and then the belt broke. It sounded like the engine blew up. But after checking things out i assumed it was the steering pump pulley siezed. So i started it up and drove it home, everything sounded normal while driving. It was a clean break on the belt.
I couldnt turn the pulley by hand to remove the bolts, i had to put an allen wrench on it and put alot of torque to get it to spin so i could get to the bolts. With the pump out i can turn it by hand but there is a lott of resistence and grinding noise.
Fingers are crossed its just the pump.
I know you need to use your old pulley on the new pump and you need a puller to remove it, but how do you press the pulley on to the new pump?
Thanks
