Based on all the research I did I figured it was the best way to go.  They flow well and are good for low end torque.  Most of the aftermarket headers are pretty crappy.  The units I was going to go with are about $600 so I said forget it.  People have also commented that they spend forever chasing leaks so I went with the stock units .. done and done.

If I decide to get crazy with my engine build I can always take it to my guy and have him adapt to the headers down the road.

They were in great shape to begin with and they were the units without the air tube fittings. I use the below product which states on the can is good up to 2000 degrees.  If it peels/flakes so be it.  I figured since they were out I might as well spend the $10.  I did the heat cycles as they instructed and we will see how it goes.

 john, this is the issue i have with going to manifolds, the engine should run cooler with the headers right ?  i have a pair of manifolds that i got off of lucas, i had intended on doing the exhaust this winter and using the manifolds. it looks like the collector is higher up than the headers and would give me more options with the exhaust pipe. anyway, the exhaust got put on hold till next winter.

thanks kent, i am familiar with that paint, i have used it in the past on my motorcycle headers, its good stuff and should hold up.

john, this is the issue i have with going to manifolds, the engine should run cooler with the headers right ?  

The factory manifolds will run cooler then then headers.

manifolds = thicker
headers = thinner

Of course you could wrap or coat headers but why the extra expense if your stock manifold run cooler, less noisy, and has good flow.  

Edit: In the past the only reason I would consider headers over AMC manifolds would be for less weight but that's not even a factor. I asked Bob to weigh his headers and he said their 13lbs each I then weighed my stock manifolds and their 14lbs each.

The “dog leg” ports Kent mentioned was the improvement AMC made to increase flow by 30 %. AMC made the best flowing stock manifolds even the chrysler magnum heads were based on the AMC design.

Well I have been traveling a ton for my new job so progress has been slow.  I am still working on doing some baisc body work/repairs and getting the J10 one color.  In the last few weeks I got a passenger door from a Wagoneer and used it on the J10.  I had to strip it of everything (woodgrain, power mirror, power window, fly window, handle, lock, etc) get it painted and then install all the manual components from the original door.  I was able to get new handle and lock seals plus window wipes from BJs for really cheap.

Here are two quick photos of my progress... getting there.  She runs like a top and the new exhaust sounds awesome so dispite the multi color paint job she is out just about every weekend.  

There is also an added bonus pulling up to all yuppies in a Range Rovers and BMW trucks with a rig loooking like this.....if there was any question, they let me go first.

Ok, I have been slacking on updates but I actually haven't been able to get much done lately... where is the summer going?

I finally have it just about all one color:


I also added a factory air dam from a J10 that was in perfect shape.  Not a bad $10 and I like the way it looks with the stock alum bumper:


I wanted to put a nice Class III hitch on the back for towing so I had to make my own since you can't get a factory hitch anymore.  I stared with a brand new Reese unit off for CL for $50.  I then decided in addition to the rear crossmember it needed to be tied into the frame for support.  I welded some 2" square tube to make the supprts to some 3/16th plats that bolt to the frame.  With (6) 1/2" grade 8 bolts thru the crossmember and another (6) tied to the frame I think I am in good shape.

I started on the OBA setup where the tank will fit right up under the bed. I'll post up some info when I get a chance.  It sucks I haven't been on the trail in a while but time has been tight.  Hope to see a bunch of members at the meeting tomorrow.
