Pocket knives
« on: February 03, 2016, 06:40:16 PM »
I'm looking for a new EDC pocket knife. I've been through probably a dozen knives over the years, nothing real fancy, bucks, kershaw, CRKT, benchmade and Spyderco to name a few...
Currently my 2 Bucks are out for service so I thought I'd pick up something new while I'm waiting. I've been leaning towards the cheaper blades lately as it's not uncommon for them to get kicked off the dock or dropped off a boat while I'm at work.
So whatcha got and where did ya get it from?
(I'm leaning toward another Benchmade as of right now)

I have a couple Kershaw blades I like.   I don't always carry them, but I sure open a lot of Amazon boxes with them :).

I carry a Kershaw Ken Onion series everyday, I have two to choose from.

the black one is a stainless frame with plastic body and 1/2 serrated blade, about 6 years old.

The blue is stainless frame with aluminum body and straight blade, about 2 years old. I like this knife because it is smaller, 3.5" closed, 6" open and has a single finger assisted opening.

They retail between $50-70, plastic being cheaper than the aluminum.

I echo Rich about a leatherman, I carry one regularly, leatherman charge.

I only do not carry at work due to being bulky and noticeable on my belt in a professional office setting.

I carry a Remington F.A.S.T.  medium. Holds a good edge and easy to sharpen when needed. Flaws are the screws in the handle loosen up and need to be tightened. You can feel it in the handle when they get loose.

Not sure what you do for work but i use my myerchin all the time. its my EDC and as heavy as it is compared to all my other knives this one always gets grabbed on my way out the door.(I have a lot to grab from) Its not bulky in the pocket and the Marlin spike fully adds to the worth of carrying a little extra weight. they are expensive if you buy right from Myerchin. My first one was a gift and i thought i lost it so bought one on ebay used for about $40. Then i found mine in the bilge of my boat this season when i was doing some plumbing. It sat there for a whole season on the mooring. I took it home, it looked like a mess but I took it apart, soaked it and cleaned with some scotchbrite and it looked new again. I would like to add that the marlin spike is a good feature to have on the trail too. i cannot tell you how many D rings i have freed up using this knife when a wrench was not available.

My next fav EDC is the CRKT Lake 111. holds and edge better than any other blade i own and it super light and slim for its size. I have the small and the larger version but prefer the larger version.

This is some of what i have to choose from at the moment. (its always growing)

I persoanlly have never been a fan of the leathermans as a edc, at least not for the knife feature. I have never had luck keeping an edge on any of my leathermans. I have a supertool, a wave, a juice and a squirt, the squirt pliers broke first time i used them and the flathead function on every one of mine it seems is twisted or broken. (now i know why they all have more than one) they are handy for the pliers but I would only get the ones with removable cutters. but for edc i personally cannot EDC one unless i was an electrician or medieval dentist.
RICH, next time you are at home depot check out the electricians tools area. klien makes a sweet blade that has 3 wire stripper slots built into the backside so you can use them while they are folded. I got one the other day for under $20. well worth it.

i used to be on the hunt for the perfect edc for me.  i started with an kershaw blur.  it is a fine knife. I eventually bought a benchmade 940 osborne design.  I haven't thought about knifes since i went with the benchmade.  i  sometimes carry a  multitool at work but a easy access knife is too important to leave behind.

my recomendation is the Benchmade 940.

Na i just collect things with sharp edges.especially any old steel. Axes are my favorite. Plus they dont run out of ammo neither.  Find a axe head for 1$ at a yard sale, put a handle and an edge on it your into nice sharp axe for less than 10 bucks.

The rule to my collection is I don't search for blades. That isually cost too much.  I like to let them find me haha

I have a tendency of bending the pocket clip on most knives I have tried and the micro torx screws most companies use that hold them on make fixing them a pita.  The two that I have ended up with are a Benchmade auto and an Emerson hard wear series (their cheaper line, $80-90 bucks compared to over $200).  Pocket clips are the only ones I have found so far that will stay put.

The Benchmade isn't cheap, but it really is a great knife.  I have carried it at work for the last 9 years and while the finish is pretty worn, the blade resharpens nicely and it still opens lightning quick.  http://www.benchmade.com/black-class/afo-ii-family.html
