Leveling kits?
« on: January 02, 2016, 09:19:32 PM »
I'm looking to level my '08 Ram. Looking at replacing the struts not just a spacer kit. Truck has 100k so I'm guessing new struts isn't a bad idea. I'm looking at 2 brands, Bilsteins
http://m.summitracing.com/parts/bsn-24-186988
And Rancho
http://m.autoanything.com/suspension-systems/rancho-quicklift-loaded-leveling-struts
Cost of the Bilsteins is less but I'd be buying new coils and strut mounts. The Ranchos are ready to bolt in...looks like the Bilstein route would be $100ish cheaper all said and done, but with the added hassle of mounting the coils.
How much of a PIA is it to mount the coils?
Any other info of ideas?
Thanks,
Matt

I have installed the bilsteins on many Rams with zero complaints.  My 05 grand has them as well.  They ride fantastic.  For mounting the coils it's pretty easy as long as you can compress the springs safely.  You should be able to rent a compressor from autozone or the like.

I am waiting for the tires on my wife suburban to wear out a bit, but I plan on a level kit for it simply because I put a 2" hitch on the front and it hangs down about 1.5" below the front air damn plastic.  It hangs just low enough that makes some driveways anooying because it hits, or parking and hitting it on parking lot curbs.  I was planning on the Rancho strut and spring combo simply because it comes with the springs on the struts and doing this in my driveway will save install time not having to disassemble the spring/struts.  Also if I ever want to go back to stock, simple swap back for the same reason.  If I had a nice spring compressor, I think I would put more consideration into the bilsteins or others like them, but I do not and the closest place to rent a spring compressor or shop that has one is more than a country mile.
