Ok so I got the jeep with no check engine lights however the other day I filled the tank and My fuel guage kept dancing around saying it was full then empty and triggered my fuel light.  Then the fuel light went out and the check engine light did as well.  I drove it for the past few days with no issues with the check engine light coming on and was going to head down for my sticker but figured I would throw the code reader on first just to see if an codes were in the computer.  It reads P0463.  Well I did some research and what turns up most is telling me I need to change the fuel pump sending unit.  I have no issues with fuel delivery and no check engine light lit.  Will this fail inspection because as soon as I erase the code it comes back as soon as I start the jeep again but doesnt light the dash check engine light.

I beleive from my experience that it is only going to fail my inspection emissions wise if it is noted as a HARD code in which would trigger the check engine light to illuminate correct?  I should be able to get this inspected and pass if the check engine light does come on in the next day or so while driving right?

Whos had this code and did changing the fuel sending unit fix the issue.  I mean having an annoying guage that works and then doesnt irritates me so I would like to fix it anyway but would like to get this stickered before my 7 days is up first if possible.

Any suggestions?
Any other reasons for the code P0463.  Here is what I found

Hex Code = 96
Generic Scan Tool Code = P0463
DRB Scan Tool Display = Fuel Level Sending Unit Volts Too High ( and this s what my scanner says on the screen)
Description of Diagnostic Trouble Code = Circuit shorted to voltage between PCM and fuel gauge sending unit.

I'm not a zj guy but I'm thinking you have a pin hole in the brass float. If so you can pull the unit and change the float most all floats are about the same size. I did this very thing a few months ago and used a CJ brass float in a ford 350, same exact size.

Do you know for a fact the engine light works? Turn the key on without starting to check.

Check for good connection to the sending unit

Have someone watch the gauge while you check/wiggle wires from the dash gauge to the sending unit.

If you haven't found the issue at that point drop the tank and check the float arm, move it up and down making sure it registers properly at the gauge or use a ohms meter.

If it works fine check the float for a pin hole. Pull it off and shake the brass float chances are you'll hear a small amount of fuel sloshing around in it.

I did the wiggle check in the cages didn't seem to move. next step will be pulling the tank down and checking with a voltmeter and probably replacing the fuel sending unit itself,

I would check the wires all the way to the sending unit there could be an issue anyway between the gauge and sending unit. Also make sure you have multimeter set for ohms not volts.

If there is an issue with the sending unit replace it with the fuel pump and use a factory part. I have personally had a lot of issues with aftermarket fuel pumps especially in "newer" jeeps.
