So today I changed out my steering box, power steering pump, and installed a C-ROK steering reinforcement plate on the inside of the frame as my bumper mount acts as one on the outside.
I used a dodge durango box out of a 1998 durango v-8 4x4 w/o plow package which I got at a junkyard in walpole for $50, worth about $200 new (incl core return).
The swap was going good until I removed the return hose which goes from the gear box to the reservoir on the steering pump and the plastic nipple on the reservoir snapped off. So I had to got to Everetts junkyard in Brockton and get a power steering pump for $30. There was no good way of separating the pump from the reservoir without damaging it so I had to buy the whole thing.
All said and done after installing the steering box, new pump, and brace the difference in steering is quite noticeable. The turning radius lock to lock appears to actually be better than my old one, the wheels turn easier and quicker. All the slop in steering seems to be gone, the response of the steering is immediate and not 1/4 of a turn later.
After Fall Crawl I'll post about how the box performs on the trail.
