I bought a Rubicon from a coworker and got it at a great deal, this is because it needs some TLC. One of the major issues I see is that the reared might be on the way out. I have it onjackstands waiting for some new shocks and I took the tires off to check the brakes and while it was off the ground I decided to run it with no load and no knobbies making noise. I felt a slight vibration and heard a little humm. My friend said sound like the gearing is worn and could be going. We noises fluid coing out of the axles and so we are gong to do the bearings and seals on the axles, along with the emergency and regular brakes. If I put it back together and still feel it the Im going to need to get that done, anyone know a good jeep shop around Boston that can do Dana 44 rear ends?

it sounds more likely like bearings, rather than the gears, but you never know.

Congratulations on your new purchase

When you had it on stands and under power were the tires spinning true?

How many miles?

one other thing to consider is driveline...im going to assume you have the jackstands under the axle, but if its supported by the frame the driveshaft might be slightly binding...id check u-joints before throwing money at the diff.

It probably just needs maintenance, we do a lot of bearings and seals on those.

We also offer a one hour inspection service to go from front to rear and top to bottom.
That's one hour on the lift with Chris.
Usually there is another 30 minutes gifted to write it up and go over everything with you.

If there's work it does need or will need, Chris will find it.

Nice Jeep!

I had the Jeep on the stands by the frame and so that when the shocks come I can just swap them out. I didn't want any load on the axle and shocks. When I tried running the jeep in the air the tires were already off. I don't know if it was bad axle bearings or a drive shaft that is out of balance but I will know that before I send it to the shop for rear end service. I just cut off the old bearings and stuff and pressed all the new things on today so if there is no rain tomorrow I can thought that stuff on. And it has 206k on it. My friend bought it new and was doing like 90 miles a day just back and forth to work.

Win the chance to fix my Jeep? Sure you did! I'll let you do and I won't even charge you Smiley

Because of Hurricane Sandy I haven't gotten a chance to put the axles back in yet. Also the bags I had covering the axles blew off during the storm and I'm not sure if water had got in there, so I got a new gasket and I'm gonna take off the diff cover and drain out every thing and do a little inspection and see how the bearings look if possible.

when I say bearings, I mean axle shaft bearings, not carrier bearings.

You'll have to remove both shafts and gears to inspect the carrier bearings.
